"Huxley, I am done dealing with you."
"Fine. Then I'm taking Rhea and leaving."
"Hey! Are you just bailing on dinner? Dr. Shultz specifically invited us, and if you leave with Rhea right now, Quinn is going to be devastated..."
Winifred's heart hammered against her ribs.
Her hands shook as she pulled paper towels from the dispenser for Quinn.
"Are you okay, Winifred?" Quinn asked, her large eyes bright and innocent.
Winifred looked at her sweet, trusting face, entirely at a loss for words.
If she told Quinn right now that Huxley's first love had returned and that he was completely emotionally checked out, the stress might trigger a medical emergency. And besides, she had no right to interfere in their relationship.
A crisis like this could only be resolved by the people involved.
Her heart ached terribly.
Tears pricked her eyes as she quickly crouched down, using the paper towels to scrub the mud off Quinn's shoes to hide her face.
When she finally guided Quinn back to the private room, the scene waiting for them was sickening.
Rhea was pressed tightly against Huxley's side. Huxley held a piece of grapefruit, gazing at her with total devotion as he gently fed it to her.
"It's too big," Rhea whined softly.
Huxley carefully broke the segment apart, selecting a perfect bite-sized piece, and fed it to her again.
"Huxley, what are you doing?" Quinn's face drained of color.
Rhea's expression shifted instantly. In a split second, her eyes filled with tears, and she let out a choked sob. "Huxley, who is..."
Huxley rubbed her back soothingly. "Relax. It's okay. Don't be scared."
Quinn looked like she had been struck by lightning. She stormed into the room, her hand shaking as she pointed at Rhea. "Who is she?"
"Huxley!" Rhea cried, burying her face into his chest.
"It's okay, I've got you," Huxley murmured, wrapping his arms around her defensively. He snapped his head up, glaring at Quinn. "Are you crazy?! Look at her, you're terrifying her!"
"I asked you who she is!" Quinn screamed, her lips trembling, her tears spilling over.
