Neither the matriarch nor her daughter-in-law breathed a single word about the horrific scandals currently dominating the news.
Nelly smirked to herself. Just as she thought—Yvette was such a rare, elite catch that the Lockwoods were desperate to secure her for Leland. They wouldn't dare mention Iris's ruined reputation because they were too busy kissing up to the Seaport family. They clearly wanted this union just as badly.
Nelly turned to her right, placing a fond hand on Yvette's shoulder, ready to formally introduce the brilliant businesswoman.
Suddenly, a shrill, ecstatic gasp erupted from the corner of the room.
"Oh my god! Iris! You are literally my ultimate idol!"
Nelly's grand introduction was violently derailed as everyone turned to look.
It was Fabiola, the young wife of Leland’s younger brother, Wyatt. Having married young and had a baby early, Fabiola was sitting in a corner chair next to a stroller where her four-month-old son was sleeping. She had been quietly watching the baby with a nanny, but the moment she heard the phrase "queen of reality TV," her eyes lit up.
Overcome with pure, unfiltered fan-girl emotion, she launched into a passionate confession.
"Iris, I've loved you since your debut! I was a sophomore in college. I was so socially anxious, but your bright, bubbly personality completely inspired me! You were so gentle and pure. You gave me so much strength when I was lost!"
"Ah! I'm going to cry!" Iris said, genuinely moved. After weeks of brutal public backlash, this unprompted adoration felt incredible.
Nelly took the opportunity to elevate the mood. "Go on, sweetheart, give your biggest fan a hug."
Iris practically jogged across the room to Fabiola, phone in hand, eagerly offering to exchange numbers. "Thank you so much for supporting me. I'll send you a special gift!"
Fabiola, weeping tears of joy at being so close to her idol, grabbed Iris's hands tightly. "Don't be sad, Iris! I know it's been so hard!"
Ouch.
Nelly's face scrunched up like a crumpled paper bag, utterly mortified. Her prized darling had just been publicly roasted, dragging Nelly's own dignity down with her. If Iris, merely a daughter-in-law of the Seaport Lockwoods, was associated with such filth, then Yvette, an actual daughter of that family...
This matchmaking attempt was turning into a disaster.
But Yvette didn't even blink. "Has Leland been informed?"
Sylvia and Shannon kept their serene smiles in place. "Not yet."
Yvette leaned forward, dripping with confidence. "I came here today with Mrs. Sutton and Iris for one very specific reason. The last time Leland and I crossed paths in Emerald Town, I explicitly told him he had my permission to pursue me."
