Outside, in the most secluded corner of the garden.
Winifred stood on the damp, mossy stone path, calmly watching a furious Iris Morgan.
"Back off! Leave this family, leave Leland, and I might just let you walk away in one piece!" Iris snarled.
Winifred looked at her, entirely unfazed. "Do you actually think you have the power to control me?"
Iris certainly didn't have the brains or the strength to intimidate her. But Iris believed she held the ultimate trump card.
"I am giving you one chance, Winifred. If you know what's good for you, you'll walk away and give Leland back to Yvette. If you don't, I swear to God..."
Winifred watched the murderous glint in Iris's eyes. "You'll do what?"
Iris gritted her teeth in a vicious smile. "I'll tell Sylvia and the rest of the Lockwoods everything. I'll tell them you were married. That you’re divorced. That you are nothing but damaged goods."
The Lockwoods were the wealthiest, most elite family in Kingsbridge. There was no way the heir to their empire would be allowed to marry a divorced woman. Being exposed and thrown out would completely ruin Winifred. As far as Iris was concerned, offering her the chance to leave quietly was a massive favor.
Winifred didn't even flinch.
"Leland already knows I was married and divorced, Iris. You don't need to strain yourself trying to blackmail me. And as for being 'damaged goods'—if we're judging women by their pasts, you must be straight out of the junkyard. We both know you're a frequent flyer at the women's surgical clinic."
That night Iris had been rushed into an emergency gynecological surgery for massive bleeding, it was obvious it wasn't a procedure done on a saint. And since Holden had later sworn he hadn't slept with Iris, her messy medical history pointed to a rather wild past.
It wasn't surprising, given the company she kept. Her best friend, Yvonne, had actively slept with a married man, harassed his wife for months until she finally agreed to a divorce, and then completely alienated the man's children. And Shelly Hale? A woman with zero professional skills whose only talent was seducing Quentin Adams.
