It felt like the sky had caved in.
Winifred stood in the blizzard, howling in sheer agony. Her bare feet had been cut open on the icy ground, and drops of her vibrant crimson blood stained the pure white snow.
It took Quentin over ten agonizing minutes to find out what had happened and call her back.
"I am so sorry, Winifred! I sincerely apologize for what my parents did!"
He admitted it. They had kidnapped her children.
"Give them back to me!" she shrieked. "I don't want your apologies! I just want my babies safe!"
"I'm sorry!" Quentin pleaded. "My dad wasn't thinking straight. He borrowed a van from a cousin and was trying to drive them back to Seaport City to Holden's house, but... there was an accident on the way. Seth and Annelise... they escaped."
A small hospital over a hundred miles outside the city limits had called him. Albert had sustained a head injury and needed family to pay his medical bills. And he had no idea where the children had gone.
Winifred wiped the snow from her eyelashes, wrapping her arms around her violently shivering body. It was freezing, and her babies were so small, lost out there in the wilderness.
"Winifred," Quentin said, his voice laced with sorrow. "For the sake of what we had, will you please forgive them?" They were in their fifties; they couldn't survive prison. He believed she loved him enough to extend that love to his parents. Since the kids had escaped and hadn't actually been delivered to Holden, there was no real harm done, right? If she just forgave them, the matter could be settled.
A hysterical, breathless laugh tore from Winifred's throat. "At a time like this, all you care about is protecting your parents?!"
"I care about you! You are the most important thing to me, but we're a family, and family needs to be forgiving—"
"Quentin Adams! If a single hair on my children's heads is harmed, I will destroy your entire family!"
She hung up and sprinted through the snow straight into Declan's house. Soaking wet and freezing, she dragged the heavily sleeping man up by his collar and slapped him back and forth across the face.
