Just as Holden was reeling from the sheer, terrifying intensity of the toddler's words, the boy turned sharply on his heel and marched away.
Declan, who was still leaning against the wall catching his breath, immediately pushed himself off and gave chase.
"Seth, your incision hasn't fully healed. Don't walk so fast!"
But the little boy's pace didn't falter.
Declan bent down to scoop him up. "Come here, let me carry you."
"If you carry me, it's going to hurt more."
Watching the boy's small back and hearing those words, Holden's gaze drifted down toward Seth's waist. A dull, heavy ache settled in his chest.
Dragging his leaden legs, Holden made his way to the doctors' offices. This was Kingsbridge Central Hospital, the largest and most prestigious public facility in the city. Seth's surgery had taken place at the children's hospital, so Holden couldn't get any details about the boy's condition. The doctor only offered a brief overview of Winifred's case.
"The patient suffered a severe head trauma three years ago, resulting in a subdural hematoma. The recent emotional shock and extreme stress triggered a relapse, affecting her cerebral blood vessels..."
Holden didn't hear a single word after that. His mind completely stalled on the phrase: *Suffered a severe head trauma three years ago, resulting in a hematoma.*
He cut the doctor off, his entire body trembling. "How... how did she injure her head?"
"I have no idea," the doctor replied, clicking out of the patient's chart. He wasn't the lead surgeon for Winifred's case; he had merely reviewed her initial intake notes.
Holden's eyes filled with tears. "Will this surgery clear the clot? Will she make a full recovery?"
"I'm not the operating surgeon, so I can't say for sure."
"Are there risks?"
"Of course. Anytime you slice into the human body, there are severe risks."
