He straightened up. Two nurses were wheeling a medical cart loaded with medication. One opened the door while the other pushed the cart through.

Holden seized the opportunity. "Can you let me in to sit with her?"

"ICU visitations are strictly scheduled," the nurse said flatly. "You can only go in during designated hours, and only with the doctor's explicit permission."

The door clicked shut.

Holden remained planted in the hallway. He waited in agonizing suspense until the afternoon, when the legendary "visiting hours" supposedly began, but the doctors still refused him entry.

The reason was straightforward: to prevent cross-infection, no visitors were allowed until she was stabilized.
