Holden's smile was a toxic cocktail of darkness, deceit, mockery, and pure malice.
"Winifred, you came back from the dead, yet you have no reaction to seeing me with Iris? Weren't you always terrified I'd be stolen away by her?"
Looking at his nearly unhinged face, Winifred couldn't reconcile this man with the magnificent, aristocratic heir he used to be.
She didn't want to delve into why Holden had turned out like this.
She didn't want to know a single thing about him.
Channeling her energy, she shoved aside the arm he had braced against the wall to block her.
Whoosh...
She squeezed past him and bolted.
"Hahahahaha!"
Behind her, Holden, like a madman, laughed uproariously.
"Winifred, fleeing in a panic, too afraid to face it? Terrified of hearing the details of me and Iris being together?"
"But I insist on telling you. When I found out you died, I hated you to death. I wanted revenge."
"You heard me right. I want revenge."
"I figured a high-profile romance would be enough to piss you off so much you'd claw your way back from the grave."
"Watching me spoil Iris rotten from the other side..."
"Did it make you sick with jealousy? Furious? So angry you couldn't stay dead?"
"That's why you couldn't hold back and rushed back to find me."
"I didn't get into a car accident early yesterday, or late yesterday. I just happened to crash right in front of your clinic. You are so damn wicked."
God.
Was he even speaking human language?
Holden was possessed by some evil spirit!
Winifred quickened her pace to escape.
Left standing at the restroom entrance, Holden's smile froze on his handsome face.
"Am I dead to her?"
A dark figure emerged from behind another wall.
It was his assistant, Miles Bauer, who was always on standby for his boss.
Miles had a belly full of complaints he couldn't hit the brakes on.
He continued, "Ms. Morgan is a top-tier celebrity, a reality show goddess, a national sweetheart."
"And Winifred? A regular doctor at a small clinic, a bottom-rung wage slave. Look at her, hustling a part-time gig here at the Sutton family just to make ends meet."
"Compared to Ms. Morgan, Winifred is dirt beneath her feet."
"Her feigned indifference toward you is just the frustration of not getting what she wants. She's playing hard to get, trying to provoke you into coaxing her."
Winifred's love for Holden... never mind her faking her death.
Even if she had truly died, her obsession would never fade.
Over on the other side, Iris, temporarily without Holden's company, was completely overwhelmed by the adoring guests swarming her.
She retreated to stand beside her mother, Beatrice.
Relying on the deterrent effect of her mother's senior status, they managed to block the obsessive men and women fawning over her.
The mother and daughter stood close, holding hands.
Iris leaned in and whispered into her mother's ear, "Winifred is a servant for the Sutton family now. She's here today, taking care of Mrs. Sutton. Did you notice?"
Hearing this, Beatrice immediately scanned Nelly's area. She didn't see Winifred waiting on anyone. Instead, her eyes caught a girl with a stunning, curvy figure walking down the other end of the red carpet, wearing a mask and a pearl-white housekeeper uniform, exuding a vibrant, youthful elegance.
