But there was nothing.
Hebert’s expression stayed completely composed and distant, as though last night had never even happened. A strange, sinking feeling crept into me, one that I couldn’t quite shake.
“The proposal looks good. There are a few areas that need tweaking—I’ve marked them for you,” he said flatly, handing the file back to me. I took the document and said, “I overheard Cecilia earlier, what she said about the orphanage. To reduce any negative impact on Bloodmoon Pack, you could just suspend my position as acting Luna for now. There’s no need for you to defend me and make the pack carry unnecessary criticism.”
Hebert frowned slightly and raised his gaze to meet mine. “Ashley, I don’t care about those ridiculous opinions. Bloodmoon Pack is where it is today because of strength, not because of a few petty words.”
His tone was firm, filled with an undeniable authority. “Their opinions mean nothing. And you shouldn’t care either. You’re smart and capable—I’m not going to let a few useless comments invalidate you.”
I looked into his eyes, but the uneasy feel.
in
my chest only grew stronger.
So, he wasn’t defending me? It’s just because I’m useful to him?
Stop overthinking, Ashley. I bit down hard on my lower lip, silently berating myself. Last night, Hebert wasn’t thinking clearly— his instincts had completely taken over because of the heat. If it hadn’t been me, any other she–wolf standing there would’ve triggered that raw, primal desire in him. It wasn’t about me. It was just biology. Nothing more, nothing less.
Hebert never gave me any clear promise of affection. From the very beginning, what we had was just a partnership.
So I had no right to be angry with him.
But I couldn’t hold back. I snapped, “Of course, you can brush off those nasty rumors! You’re the top Alpha of the strongest pack, Bloodmoon Pack. But I’m not you! My position is ridiculously awkward. I’m a Luna from a rival pack, a defective one at that- with no wolf spirit! How do you expect me to just ignore those kinds of cruel accusations like you can?”
I took a deep breath to steady myself, but my voice still trembled as I continued, “And besides, Hebert, I’m only a temporary stand–in Luna here in Bloodmoon Pack. Once everything is handed over, I’ll be gone. That was the deal from the start. I need to
think about my life after I leave.”
Hebert suddenly raised his head and stared at me, not saying a single word.
The heavy silence was suffocating, like a mountain crashing onto my shoulders. A wave of confusion and sharp pain surged through me.
He had silently agreed.
So, he really had no intention of stopping me from leaving. After all, that had been the deal from the start. I was just a temporary stand–in, nothing more. Last night’s madness? It was nothing but an absurd, ridiculous mistake.
I swallowed hard, forcing back the sting in my eyes, and spoke, my voice stiff and emotionless: “Don’t worry. As long as I’m still in this position, I’ll give it my all. Before I leave completely, I’ll make sure every report, every proposal is flawless. The transition will be seamless.”
“You’re that desperate to leave?”
Hebert suddenly shot to his feet. His towering frame blocked out the sunlight streaming through the window. Hands slammed onto the table, his body leaning forward with an air of menace that made the space between us feel suffocating. His eyes burned with an anger so fierce it felt like it could consume me whole.
The abruptness of his words startled me, and I instinctively stepped back. My mind went blank, utterly unable to process why he was suddenly so furious.
