“Well, look what we’ve got here,” sneered the leader, a man with a nasty scar cunting across his face is greedy eyes darted between my car and me. “The ex–Lama of the Blackwood Pack.”

“I’m still the Lima!” I corrected him sharply, forcing calmness into my voice as I tried to assert my authority. “If you dare lay a hand on me, you’re declaring war on the entire Blackwood Pack”

The scar faced man let out a harsh, mocking laugh. “Come on, sweetheart, drop the act. Everyone in the city knows Alpha Brian rossed you out like yesterday’s trash. He’s too busy playing house with his new girl to worry about you.”

My face turned deathly pale.

“Unless…” He leaned in closer, and the nauseating stench made me want to gag. “Unless he’s still willing to stand up for you. Come on, call him.”

He tossed a phone onto my lap, his eyes brimming with malicious intent. “Tell hits you’ve been kidnapped. If he still sees you as his woman, let him bring the money to get you out. If he doesn’t… well, then we’ll just have to ‘take care of you ourselves.” Humiliation and fear were like two giant hands strangling me, making it hard to breathe. My hands shook as I grabbed the phone and made the call–the one I’d sworn I’d never make again.

The phone rang for what felt like forever before it was answered.

“Ashley?” came Brian’s voice, laced with impatience. “What now? What kind of tricks are you playing this time?”

“Brian, help me…” My voice trembled, heavy with panic. “I… I’m in trouble, on the outskirts of the city…”

“Acting?” He let out a cold laugh, cutting me off. “You really think I’d believe you? Ashley, you were just at the store running your mouth, saying you didn’t need me anymore. And now, you’re pulling this pity stunt? Can’t you come up with a better trick? Besides, didn’t I already tell you I’d talk to you in two days? What’s the point of this drama now?”

“I didn’t!” I screamed, tears spilling uncontrollably down my face. “It’s true! Someone stopped my car! They’re-”

“How convenient,” he interrupted again, his voice as icy as frost. “Silvia just fell down the stairs and might not make it, and you just ‘happen‘ to run into ‘trouble‘ out in the middle of nowhere? Ashley, are you really so desperate for my attention that you’d stoop this low?”

Then came the flat, soulless “beep” of the call being ended.

The world went silent.

I dialed the number over and over, almost frantically. No answer. No answer. Still no answer.

The scar–faced wolf snatched the phone from my hand, sneering as he tossed it to the ground and smashed it under his boot. ” Looks like your Alpha has already made his choice.”

He stepped closer, that twisted grin of triumph plastered across his face. Around us, the other wolves laughed cruelly, their mocking jeers loud and piercing. My vision blurred, and despair surged through me, drowning me like a crashing wave.
