Hebert’s POV
It was Cecilia’s voice.

That delicate, intoxicating atmosphere that belonged solely to me and Ashley was shattered, like a bubble popped by the sharp edge of her tone. It vanished entirely. I could almost hear the snap, like an invisible current running between us had been abruptly severed.
Ashley froze, her body stiffening. The hazy, dreamy look in her eyes faded in an instant, replaced by clarity and a flicker of embarrassment. She took a step back.
As for me? I was still caught in the moment.
I couldn’t help but wonder-if that intrusive voice hadn’t broken the spell, would things between us have already escalated? Damn it. All I intended was to soak my shirt a little, flaunt some muscle, and throw her off balance. Instead, I ended up losing control of myself.
My head was filled with the image of her slightly parted lips, practically begging for a kiss, and the way her wet shirt clung to her, hinting at those flawless curves.
The wolf inside me growled in my veins, restless and demanding action.
I forced the urge down and stormed off. Back in my room, I yanked off the drenched shirt, changed faster than I thought possible, and splashed cold water on my face. Only after I’d calmed-barely-did I head for the study.
In the study, Cecilia paced back and forth anxiously. The moment I walked in, she rushed over to me.
“What’s so urgent,” I said as I sank into the leather chair behind the massive mahogany desk, my tone as cold as ice, “that you had to yell about it?”
She didn’t seem offended. Instead, she gave me a shy smile, one she probably thought was charming. Out of nowhere, she pulled out a basket covered with a checkered cloth.
“I made you an apple pie, Hebert,” she said, placing the basket on my desk and pulling back the cloth. The sweet, heavy scent of cinnamon instantly filled the air. “I thought you might like to try it…”
“This is your ‘urgent matter’?” I cut her off, a wave of irritation rising in my chest.
Her smile froze.
“I…”
“Cecilia,” I leaned forward, crossing my hands on the desk, staring at her with a pointed gaze, what we have is a professional relationship. You work for me. I pay you. Bringing me apple pies steps way out of that line.”
Her face turned pale, and her eyes welled up with tears almost immediately. “I… I only did it because I

like you, Hebert! I came to the Bloodmoon Pack for you!”
“Then leave,” I said coldly. “I don’t need anyone to be here ‘for me.’ If you’re unhappy with your job, you’re
free to go anytime.”
“How can you be so heartless?” She stared at me in disbelief, tears welling up in her eyes.
I had already turned her down politely before, but it seemed like she just didn’t get it.
So I kept my tone icy. “Anything else? If not, take your apple pie and leave my study.”
She bit her lip, face filled with humiliation, but eventually picked up the basket. Without another word, she turned to go.
“One more thing,” I stopped her just as she reached the door, “I’m no gentleman. If this happens again, you’ll be sent straight back to your father’s pack. Remember, keep this professional. Don’t come to me for anything else. Even if your father comes begging, it won’t change a thing.”
Her whole body stiffened. She didn’t look back. She opened the door and fled, defeated.
Finally, silence returned.
