Chapter 62
I didn’t dare cross the line with her.
Frustrated, I yanked off my tie, trying to deal with this maddening, pent-up need on my own.
Her image kept flashing vividly in my head-Ashley, in my arms, her warmth beneath my touch.
My hand moved faster…
Just when I was about to reach the peak-
Knock, knock, knock.
The sound of knocking broke the moment.
And then, a familiar voice called from outside the door.
“Alpha? It’s Ashley.”

Ashley’s POV:
After Hebert left, everything around me fell silent. The only sound remaining was my heart pounding like crazy in my chest.
I had taken a shower and changed into clean pajamas, but the sight of his suit still sitting there was a constant reminder of how humiliating that moment had been. It also reminded me of how dangerous the space between us had become.
I needed to return it, to make it clear-there could be no misunderstandings between us.
I listened carefully to the hallway outside, waiting until I was sure Cecilia’s annoying high heels had completely faded. Only then did I pick up the jacket, take a deep breath, and open the door.
His study was at the other end of the hallway. As I walked up to the door, the sound of my heartbeat felt ridiculously loud in the dead silence of the corridor. I raised my hand and knocked.
Knock, knock, knock.
The response came almost instantly.
“Come in.” The voice was raspy, rough like it had been dragged across sandpaper, yet carried a strange, restrained magnetism.
My hand hesitated on the doorknob for a moment before pushing the door open.
The moment I entered, a wave of pheromones hit me so hard I almost staggered.
It was nothing like the faint pine forest scent I had smelled in his room before-cool, clean, with a touch
of smoky tobacco; that was the aura of a strong Alpha, controlled and commanding

But here? Here, it was blazing hot, overpowering, saturated with aggressive, primal musk. That suffocating cloud of raw masculinity, tinged with a faintly sweet, post-intimate undertone, slammed into me like a solid wall.
My brain short-circuited instantly.
The study was dimly lit, just one floor lamp casting a weak glow in the space. Hebert was seated behind the desk, his figure partially veiled in shadow. I could see only his upper body.
His tie was gone, and the top two buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing sharp, defined collarbones.
That flawless, handsome face had an unusual flush to it. Those deep, piercing eyes, now like two turbulent pools of ink, carried a darkness I couldn’t decipher-dangerous and unsettling emotions swirling within.
Oh, God.
Cecilia’s so-called “emergency.”
This study, cloaked in an almost suffocating heat-one filled with desire.
And him, sitting there, practically dripping with it.
Even the faint trace of Cecilia’s scent lingering in the air.
A horrible, stomach-turning thought struck me like lightning, splitting my sanity.
They’d just had sex in here.
Minutes ago, he was in my bathroom, water still clinging to his body, those soul-piercing eyes of his tearing apart my composure, nearly pulling me under.
And then he turns around and sleeps with another she-wolf in his study?
A cold tide of disgust and humiliation burned its way up from my stomach, right to my throat. I felt like the biggest fool alive.
Worried about him misunderstanding me?
What a joke. He wouldn’t even care.
Instinctively, I stepped back, every fiber of my being screaming at me to get out of there.
“Alpha,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady, “I just came to return your jacket.”
I placed the suit jacket on the small cabinet by the door, refusing to look at him, and turned to leave without hesitation.
“Ashley.”
