Chapter 64

“I do not!” I snapped, the words flying out before I could stop therm

“Come on, Ashley,” Vicki laughed lightly, almost mockingly “Don’t lie to yourself. You’re jealous because you’re not the one having a taste of that ‘dessert.””

“Vicki! Stop joking around!” I practically yelled at her.

“Alright, alright,” she said, her tone softening as if to calm me down. “We don’t have to talk about that very distracting Alpha of yours anymore. You’re right-who Hebert is with has nothing to do with you. Let’s talk about something else. How about some gossip on your lovely ‘ex’? Interested?”

I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. “Fine. Spill.”

“Alright, grab your popcorn,” Vicki said, dropping her voice slightly, a hint of excitement sneaking through. “Blackwood Pack is a total mess right now. Silvia’s screw-ups? Worse than you think. She didn’t just embezzle funds to splurge on luxury stuff-she used that money to bribe members of the Elders Council. Now that everything’s out in the open, Brian’s furious. He threw her out of the Alpha Manor and stuck her in some villa out west, with guards watching her 24/7. Basically, it’s house arrest in all but

name.”

“And it gets juicier,” Vicki added. “Brian’s PR team is spreading stories everywhere, saying the only reason you’re here in Bloodmoon Pack is because Blackwood Pack is just so generous and powerful. That they ‘loaned’ you out to help their ‘poor, helpless neighbors.’ Every bit of reputation you’ve built here? Every bit of respect you’ve earned? It’s all getting painted as Brian’s achievement.”

Unbelievable. That’s got to be the most ridiculous, shameless lie I’ve ever heard!

“My dad told me today,” Vicki said, her tone turning serious, “that Brian’s planning to send someone to bring you back.’ He thinks you’ve done enough for Blackwood Pack’s reputation and now it’s time for you to come home.”

Home? That place stopped being my home a long time ago.

There’s no way I’m going back! Just the thought of facing Brian again, of being trapped back in that suffocating cage, made my stomach churn with disgust.

But technically speaking, I’m still part of Blackwood Pack because things with Brian… they were never fully resolved.

Unless… Unless Brian declares war on Hebert. If it came to a fight between the packs, as a Blackwood Pack member, I wouldn’t have a choice-I’d have to go back.

War, for those in power, is just a command. The ones who truly suffer are the ordinary people.

No, I can’t let it get to that point. I’ve got to figure something out-something that’ll give me a legitimate reason to stay here.

“Vicki,” a middle-aged man’s voice suddenly came through the phone. It was Vicki’s father. “Who are you

talking to?

Oh, crap, Vicki muttered under her breath Eve got to go, Ashley He’s probably about to give me another lecture on family honor

The line went dead I held the cold phone in my hand, but my chest felt like it was on fire

Vicki’s my best friend-of course she cares about me.

But she’s also part of the Blackwood Pack, and there’s no way she wouldn’t think about her family, her

pack

I don’t want to get Vicki caught up in this. I’ve got to handle it myself.

My eyes landed on the Bloodmoon Pack’s financial report sitting on the table. A bold idea hit me, like a lightning bolt breaking through the haze in my mind.
