CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHT-2

She smiled, and raised an eyebrow. “Wow. You’re a smart girl. No wonder Dom fell in love with you.”

“Are you trying to avoid the question?”

“Nope. Just giving compliments.”

“Right.”

“I can tell you don’t like that I’m here.” She said out of the blues, and I was shocked by her

statement.

“Excuse me?”

“I can tell you’re uncomfortable. You can drop the act. I know that you hate me being here.”

“You can’t be serious. Why would I dislike you being here?”

“I don’t know… Maybe because you feel threatened by my presence. Because I’m Dominic’s best

friend.”

“Why should I be angry at the fact that my mate has a best friend? Keyword; best friend. Not mate. Not wife. Or even his ex. So, why should that bother me? Unless…”

“Unless what?”

“You have feelings for him.”

She chuckled, but didn’t reply me anymore as she started swimming again. “Goodnight, Hailey.” She said without looking back at me.

And her reply was a good enough answer.

I walked back to our bedroom, Dominic was stepping out of the shower as I sat in the bed, my head was still reeling with Tricia’s words, the way she talked about Dominic, and how she acted

around him.

It was obvious, her intentions were not good. Was I the only one seeing it? Was I just overreacting? Was she just a harmless girl who was best friends with my mate?

Or was there something else.

What did she want with him?

Why was she here?

I couldn’t help but wonder if her sudden appearance had anything to do with Dominic’s past.

CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHT-2

Was he hiding something from me?

Was he still keeping secrets from me?

Did he still have feelings for her?

“What’s got your mind in a frenzy?” Dominic murmured as he sat down next to me, peppering kisses on my jaw and neck.

“How come you’ve never mentioned something about your best friend, her being a vampire is another factor that one wouldn’t forget that easily.”

Dominic didn’t seem phased by my question. No guilt, no suspicions. Just a simple answer. “She is a vampire. Yes. And, she’s a very dear friend of mine. We were like family. Why does her being a vampire bother you?”

“It doesn’t. But, why did you hide it from me? Is there a reason you’ve kept her a secret?”

“No. It’s just that, I had no reason to tell you about her. We were best friends as teenagers. Not adults. We lost contacts and stopped being in touch when we grew older. The last time I saw her, she was eighteen and was getting ready to travel. I never knew what became of her. Until today.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“Why the sudden curiosity about her?”

“Because, I don’t trust her. And she gives me bad vibes. She seems off. As if there’s something wrong with her. Did you both ever…” I trailed off, wondering if I was pushing him too far.

“Did we what?” He asked, his fingers running up and down my arms.

“Ever hook up? You and her.”

“Of course not. But Giovanni and our friends would always tease me about her having a crush on me, but I never saw her as nothing more than my best friend. And, that was it. She was like a sister to me. Always had been, and always will be.”

“Oh.”

“What? Is that the only reaction you can give me? I’m not lying, I would never lie to you, Hailey.”

“I know, Dominic. It’s just, she seems very… I don’t know. Different. Off. Like, something is bothering her.”

“Well, we’ve known her for years. Since we were kids. There’s no need to worry. She’s not a threat.”

“What does she do for a living?”

“She’s a model. That’s the only reason why she is not in her pack. She’s traveling all over the world

and doesn’t stay in one place for long.”

“Do you think that’s the real reason she left her pack?”

“Yes. I know her, Hailey. She was like a sister to me. She may be different from the girl I knew when we were kids, but, she has always had a love for modeling. She loves the attention, the cameras and the crowd. There’s no reason for her not to be a model. It’s what she loves and what she’s

good at.”

“Right. Okay. Well, I think I’m going to hit the sack. We’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”

“Right.”

Dominic switched the lights off, and climbed into the bed next to me. His arms wrapped around me, and he kissed the top of my head.

“Do you not feel comfortable with her? I can ask her to leave.” He whispered, and I could sense the sincerity in his voice.

He would do it in a heartbeat.

But as much as I disliked her, I didn’t want to be the one who sent her away. I might have misunderstood her energy, and she might not be as bad as I thought she was.

She might be a really good person.

And maybe I was being paranoid.

Maybe.

“No, Dominic. It’s okay. She’s someone from your childhood. I’m sure she’s a good person. I’m just tired, and I’m going to get some sleep.”

“Okay.”

“I love you.”

“Love you, too. Always.”

“Always.”

Then he closed his eyes, and slowly drifted off.

As I watched him sleep, his breathing becoming heavier, I couldn’t help but think of Tricia and the way she looked at Dominic.

But I immediately shook the thoughts out of my head.
