CHAPTER HUNDRED TWENTYEIGHT 1
CHAPTER HUNDRED-TWENTYEIGHT-1
DOMINIC
Two days.
It’s been two days of no sleep, relentless searching, and growing dread. Jonathan Sandler’s threats echoed in my mind, a ticking clock counting down to a catastrophe. The pack was exhausted, morale was fraying, and the human authorities were sniffing around the mainland, waiting for their
excuse to descend upon us.
I stood in my office, staring at a large map of the island, dotted with red pins marking where we’d already searched. It was almost completely covered. The only places left were treacherous sea caves along the northern cliffs and the dense, unnerving woods on the eastern side, places no one in their right mind would wander drunk at night.
Giovanni entered, looking as weary as I felt. He held a small evidence bag in his hand.
“Anything?” I asked, my voice rough.
He held up the bag. Inside was a single, muddy earring. It was a simple silver hoop, nothing fancy. “Found it near the western cliffs. Not far from where the path from the garden leads down to the beach. It’s not Hailey’s too.”
I took the bag, my stomach clenching. This was the first piece of physical evidence we’d found. It looked familiar. If it wasn’t Hailey’s, whose was it?
Tricia.
I had seen her wear a pair just like it. But she had claimed that she hadn’t gone to that part of the garden, that she went to bed early.
Could she have lied? The question echoed in the silence of the room. Hailey’s suspicion, Tricia’s hasty departure, and now this earring. It was starting to paint a picture I didn’t want to see. But I had pushed it aside, because she was my friend, and I didn’t want to believe she was capable of something like this.
Tricia was a ripper. It was in her blood, and once she starts drinking from someone, she wouldn’t
stop until she has drained them.
My heart sank. If Tricia was involved, this went from a missing person case to a murder investigation. And if Adrian was dead on my island, killed by a vampire who was a guest in my home… Jonathan wouldn’t be calling the police. He’d be calling for war.
“Has Hailey seen this?” I asked Giovanni, my mind racing.

CHAPTER HUNDRED TWENTYEIGHT-1
“No, brother. I came straight to you.”
Claim
I nodded. “Good. Keep this between us for now. I don’t want to cause a panic.” I didn’t know who or what I was fighting against here. I didn’t know if I was making a mistake of even thinking Tricia could be behind this. But these small clues were leading to her, her sudden need to leave after I had tried to make her leave several times, her claim of being in her room all night with a headache,
which could be a lie, this earring… it was all too much.
I went to find Hailey. I found her in the library, curled up on a large armchair, a book lying open but
unread in her lap. She looked up when I entered, her eyes clouded with worry.
“Any news?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
I decided that now was not the time to tell her about my suspicions concerning Tricia. I could not let my personal feelings cloud my judgment, but I also couldn’t ignore the evidence that was slowly pointing to her. I would talk to her when I was certain.
“Nothing yet,” I said, forcing a calm I didn’t feel. “But we’re widening the search to the northern caves. If he fell, he could be trapped there. At this point, if he was alive, with no water or food, he
wouldn’t make it.”
She nodded, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. I went to her, kneeling by her chair and taking her hand. “Hey, look at me. We will find out what happened. I promise.”
“I know,” she whispered, her fingers tightening around mine. “It’s just… I can’t watch you beat
yourself up like this, Dominic. This is not your fault.”
