CHAPTER HUNDRED-THIRTYTHREE-2
It was a ring. A beautiful, antique ring with a large, pear-shaped diamond in the center, surrounded by smaller diamonds. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
And then, I saw the inscription on the inside of the band. *To my star, with all my love. Always.*
It was my father’s wedding ring for her. The one he gave her when he proposed. There was blood
inside the diamond, a symbol of the binding ritual of the vampires. A blood diamond. That’s how
the men in my family married the women they loved. It wasn’t just a piece of jewelry. It was a
symbol of their eternal bond. A bond that she had so carelessly thrown away.
I knew I shouldn’t take it. It was too personal, too sacred. But something inside me, a dark, twisted part of me, wanted-it. My mother didn’t deserve it. She didn’t deserve any of this. She didn’t deserve the love my father had given her, or the life he had provided for her. The life he had sacrificed my childhood for. The life I had to pay for with my own sanity.
I snatched the ring and slipped it into my pocket. It was mine now. A small, insignificant piece of
revenge.
I closed the safe, my heart pounding in my chest. I had what I came for. Now, I just had to get out of here. The sooner I could deliver the money, the sooner this nightmare would be over.
As I turned to leave, my phone buzzed again. It was another text from the unknown number.
“Remember, I’m not very patient.”
My blood ran cold. He was watching me. He had to be. There was no other explanation, He knew I had the money. He knew I was getting ready to leave.
I got into one of the cars in the garage and drove straight to the jeweler’s downtown, my hands shaking on the steering wheel. I needed to get this stuff appraised and get my cash. Fast.
The jeweler, a sleazy looking man with greasy hair and shifty eyes, inspected the items I’d laid out on the counter. His eyes widened as he examined the blood diamond ring.
“This is… this is exceptional,” he said, his voice full of awe. He picked it up, running his thumb over the diamond. “The craftsmanship, the quality of the stone… and this… this blood diamond. It’s ancient. Where did you get this?”
“That’s none of your business,” I said, my voice cold. “How much?”
He named a price that made my head spin. It was more than enough. More than the two million I needed. It was then I knew just how expensive this ring must have been, and my mother would go berserk once she found out it was missing. She would think my father was trying to haunt her from

the grave. The thought of her panic brought a twisted smile to my face.
“Deal,” I said, my heart thumping with a mixture of fear and exhilaration.

We bargained for the other items, and within an hour, I was walking out of the shop with a briefcase full of cash. I felt a thrill course through me, a sense of power I hadn’t felt in a long time. I
was in control again. For now.
I drove back to the house, the briefcase on the passenger seat beside me. I had the money. I could pay off my blackmailer. I could breathe again.
But as I pulled into the driveway, I saw my mother’s car parked in its usual spot. A wave of dread washed over me. She was back. And she was home early.
