CHAPTER HUNDRED-THIRTYTHREE-1

TRICIA

Ever since I found out my secret wasn’t actually a secret, I’ve been restless. As much as I wanted to get my hands on something valuable, I knew the risks.

My mother, the cold hearted woman she was, had the sharpest eyes for her valuables. She would notice if even a single piece of jewelry was missing. I had to be patient. To wait for the perfect

opportunity.

I followed her around the house, a shadow in my own home. I watched her routines, her habits, the way she moved through the house like she owned it, which, in a way, she did. She had always been meticulous, a creature of habit, and that was my only advantage.

It was so funny how I had every single trait of hers, our uncanny resemblance? Our hair, our facial features. Then when it came to personality traits, as much as I hated to admit it, I was just like my mother. Her coldness? I had it too. Her manipulative ways? I inherited that too. But I was different. I wanted to be loved. I craved it. She didn’t. She craved power.

It’s really sad to think about the ‘what if’. What if my mother actually wanted me? What if she was a loving and caring mother, would my life have been different? Would I have been a better person? Or was I always destined to be this monster? This creature of darkness and despair.

I shook my head, pushing the thoughts away. I couldn’t afford to be sentimental. Not now. Not when my life was on the line.

I was in the living room, pretending to read a book when she walked in, dressed in a stunning red dress, her hair piled high on her head. She looked no day older than thirty, while she was well over fifty. Our vampire genes played a huge role in our youthful appearance.

“I’m going out,” she announced, her voice clipped. “Don’t wait up.”

“Where are you going?” I asked, trying to sound casual.

“That’s none of your business,” she said, grabbing her purse from the table. “And don’t even think about touching my things. I’ll know.”

“I won’t,” I said, my heart pounding in my chest. “Have fun.”

She rolled her eyes and walked out, the front door closing behind her with a soft click.

I waited for a few minutes, making sure she was really gone. Then, I made my move.

I ran up the stairs, my feet silent on the carpeted floor. I went straight to her bedroom, my

thumping against my ribs. I knew she had a safe in her closet, a place where she kept her most valuable possessions. My mom was a freak for material things, and she had more jewelry than a queen. She always had a safe, and she always changed the password. But I knew my mother. She was a creature of habit, and her passwords were always something personal. Something that had meaning to her.

I thought about my father, about their life together. They had a song, a silly, romantic tune that he used to hum to her. It was their song. I tried the title of the song. Nothing. I tried the date they got married. Nothing. I was running out of ideas, my panic rising with each passing second.

And then, I remembered. My father’s pet name for her. “My star.” He used to call her that because he said she was the brightest star in his sky. He was so lost in her that he also never cared about me. He loved her so blindly when all she wanted was his money. I typed it in.

The safe door swung open, revealing a treasure trove of jewels, gold, and cash. My eyes widened

at the sight. It was more than I had ever imagined.

I grabbed a handful of diamond necklaces and a few gold bars, stuffing them into my bag. I didn’t

have time to be greedy, I just needed enough to pay off my blackmailer. To buy myself some more

time.

As I was about to close the safe, something caught my eye. It was a small, velvet box. I opened it,
