CHAPTER HUNDRED-THIRTYSIX
TRICIA
“Never,” I choked out, my throat raw. “I would rather die.”
“Death is too good for you, my dear,” she said, her voice dripping with venom. “You know, one thing I’ve always been proud that you got from me is your resilience. It’s a shame you’re using it for the
wrong reasons.”
I closed my eyes, trying to block her out, but her words were like acid, burning into my brain. I
hated her. I hated her with every fiber of my being. I hated her for never being a mother to me, I
hated her for always being my tormentor. I hated her for making me this. For making me into her.
And I also hated myself. For being weak. For being so desperate that I had to resort to this. For
being a killer. For being a monster.
I was losing consciousness. The pain was too much. My body was shutting down. I was fading.
And I hated that I was finally considering the only way out. I hated that she was going to sin, she always did. And I was a fool for thinking I could win this time around when there has never been a
time that I did.
My mother was always going to win. That was her superpower. She never lost.
With the last of my strength, I crawled towards the door. I looked up at her, my vision blurry, my body screaming in protest. I could see her smug smile, her triumphant look. She had won.
I let out a weak, pathetic whimper. It was a sound of defeat. A sound of surrender.
I was broken. She had finally broken me.
“I… I sold it because…” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I killed someone and tried to hide my tracks, but someone saw me and now they’re blackmailing’me. They wanted two million dollars.”
I looked at her, my eyes pleading. I was ready to beg. I was ready to do whatever it took to get out of this hell. I was ready to swallow my pride, my hatred, my everything. I was ready to be her little puppet, if only she would let me live.
I saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a look of cold calculation. She was processing the information, weighing her options. I could see the gears turning in her head, the cogs of her manipulative mind whirring into action.
“You’re such a fool, Tricia. You sold my jewelry worth hundreds of millions for chicken change? And who, pray tell, did you kill? Because you have never cared about a soul and he isn’t your first

kill.” she asked, her voice now laced with a morbid curiosity.

She always knew about the strong crush I had on Dominic from my teenage years, always mocked me for it, because the boy I was dying over didn’t give two fucks about me. He was always interested in any other girl that wasn’t me.
“A human. His father is Dominic’s close friend and I fed from him on New Years night. I drained him dry and ended up killing him. Apparently, someone took pictures of me and has been blackmailing me ever since. I sold your jewelry to get the money but then you came back before I could pay the blackmailer and…” I said, my voice trailing off. I was pathetic. I hated her more and more for making me do this.
She was silent for a long moment, and then laughed. A mocking maniacally laugh, which made me
want to rip my ears out. She was actually enjoying this. My misery was her entertainment. A fool,
that was what she called me. I was a fool.
“You see, this is why you will never be as good as me. You are weak. You let your emotions get the best of you, and now look at you. You’re a pathetic, whimpering mess, and you have brought shame to our name. And now you want me to help you? Why should I?” she said, her voice dripping with contempt. “That stupid mutt, Dominic. He has put you in more trouble than you can handle. I have told you severally that that boy is only going to bring you to your destruction. But you’re so desperate for his attention that you’re willing to throw your life away for him.”
She looked down at me, her eyes a mixture of disappointment and pity. It was a look I knew all too well, a look that had haunted me my entire life.
“You killed a human on a werewolf’s territory, and you expect me to clean up your mess?” she continued, her voice rising. “Killing him isn’t even the problem! It’s the fact that you were stupid enough to let yourself be caught doing it!”
And that was what my mother and I had in common. Never caring about the victim, but always caring about the image.
“I know,” I whimpered, my body still on fire. “I’m sorry. I was so stupid. I was so desperate. I didn’t know what else to do.”
She sighed, a long, drawn out sound of exasperation. “Fine. I will help you. But not because I care about you. I’m doing this to protect our family’s reputation. I have a reputation to uphold, and I will not let you ruin it with your carelessness. The Vampire Council is already looking for an excuse to crack down on us, and I will not give them one. And if a war with the werewolves starts because of your foolishness, it will affect my businesses. I don’t like it when my businesses are affected.”
She motioned to one of the guards. “Turn off the lights. And get her out of there. Bring her to my
