CHAPTER HUNDRED-THIRTYNINE-2
“Then let me help you,” she said, her voice strong and sure. “Let me share the burden. Let me be by
your side. Let’s figure this out together. Like we always have.”
I looked at her, her eyes filled with determination and love, and something broke inside of me. I pulled her into a hug I didn’t know I needed, my shoulders breaking from the burden I’ve had to
carry.
I kissed her forehead, the scent of her hair filling my nose, bringing a sense of peace and calmness. She was right. We were stronger together. We always have been.
“Thank you,” I whispered into her hair.
“That’s what families are for,” she replied, her voice a gentle hum.
For the first time in days, a small glimmer of hope flickered in my chest. Although, there was no reason to be hopeful but having the best support system, especially in times of trouble, was the biggest gift a man could ask for..
As much as the burden weighed me down, she was helping me carry it. And that made all the
difference.
“Do you have any ideas?” I asked, pulling away from the embrace, but not letting go of her.
“None that would not risk the wrath of the human authorities,” she admitted. “Let’s not talk about this. That’s all we’ve been doing the past few days, and we’re no closer to a solution. Let’s just have a moment. Just me and you. I’ve missed you.”
She was right. There was no use talking about the same things over and over again. We needed a break, a moment of peace before the storm.
“Okay,” I agreed. “What do you want to do?”
“Take me out,” she said, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “Maybe we could have a movie date night, or just drive around and take a walk.”
“Anything for you,” I smiled.
I would take her out to the most expensive dinner in town, but a simple night at home would do too. Anything for her.
I kissed her softly, a promise, a vow to be better, to do better. She was the love of my life, the only one for me, and I would move mountains to make her happy.
I grabbed her hand, the diamond of her ring glittering in the soft light. We walked out of the study,

the door closing behind us, the weight of the world no longer resting on my shoulders.
Clairm
We decided that wee were going to go for a drive on the island and sit by the ocean, listening to the waves and watching the stars. It was the perfect escape, and just the distraction we both
needed.
I couldn’t believe how much things have changed in a matter of months.
“Do you ever regret this?” I asked, as we walked towards the car, the stars twinkling above us.
“What do you mean?” she asked, her voice a quiet whisper.
“Being here, being with me, the whole pack thing,” I replied, the words tumbling out. “You’ve given up so much. You gave up your old life. Is it worth it? Would you rather be back there, away from all this chaos, this madness?”
I couldn’t believe I’d actually said it. Hailey had lived a chaos free life with our son for five years, one without the constant threats of violence and danger that came with being a werewolf, and she had sacrificed it all to be here with me, with our son.
“You’re an idiot sometimes, you know that?” she said, stopping and turning to face me, her hands on her hips. “I would never change any of this. It may not be an easy life, but it’s ours. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Not for the world.”
She reached out, cupping my face, her eyes filled with love and conviction. “I love you, Dom. You are the only man I want to be with. The only one for me. You, me, and our son. We’re a family. And I wouldn’t change that for anything.”
I smiled, my heart feeling fuller than ever.
“I love you too,” I whispered.
“Besides,” she continued, a teasing smile playing on her lips, “if I wanted an easy life, I would’ve stayed with my ex.”
I growled, the mere thought of her with another man sending a jolt of possessive rage through me. She laughed, her eyes sparkling.
“Relax,” she said, her voice low and playful. “It’s all in the past. I’m yours. And I always will be.”
She kissed me, and I knew that nothing else mattered. She was my future, my past, and my present. She was everything.
As we walked, she suddenly pulled to a stop as she started at something in front of us, right next
to the ocean.
