CHAPTER HUNDRED-FORTY

HAILEY

I slapped my hand over my mouth as a shocked gasp escaped my lips. My eyes widened, unable to tear my gaze away from the grisly sight.

Adrian’s body was laid out on the beach, his torso bare, his head nowhere to be seen. His skin was pale, his limbs splayed at unnatural angles. The sand around him was dark with blood, the metallic scent of it mixing with the salty air.

I could feel Dominic tense beside me, a low growl rumbling in his chest. He was in Alpha mode, his protective instincts kicking in. He put an arm around me, pulling me close, shielding me from the

horror.

“Stay here,” he commanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl. “Don’t move.”

He started to walk towards the body, but I grabbed his arm, stopping him. I didn’t want him to go near it. I didn’t want him to touch it. I didn’t want him to be a part of this.

“Dom, no,” I pleaded, my voice trembling. “Don’t-”

“Hailey, I have to,” he said, his voice firm. “This is my territory. My responsibility.”

He gently removed my hand from his arm and continued to walk towards the body, his movements slow and deliberate. He was a predator stalking his prey, but there was no prey here. Only a victim.

I watched him, my heart pounding in my chest. I was scared. Our greatest fear had happened. We found Adrian. After weeks of searching, praying and hoping that we found him alive, that we found him safe and sound, that this was all a sick prank, we found him.

Dead.

He was crouched down next to the body, his eyes scanning the scene, his nostrils flaring. He was in his element, a master of his domain, even in the face of such tragedy.

He was a leader, a protector. And in that moment, I had never been more proud of him.

He stood up and backed away from the body, he immediately mind linked the pack as he walked

back towards me.

“What is it?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“There is no scent. Not even a little. The person who had done this was very smart, we don’t know what was done to him. No signs of torture on the body, but it was probably inflicted on his head which is missing now, probably eaten by a shark. Whoever did this, threw him into the ocean,

knowing it would mask their scents and any fingerprints that could have been left behind.” he said, his jaw tight with frustration.

I looked at him, my mind racing. This was a professional hit. A message. Someone was playing a game, and we were the pawns.

“What do we do?” I asked.

He looked at me, his eyes a mixture of anger and fear. He was scared, I could see it. He pulled me into his arms, taking me away from the body as he walked us to the car to wait for his men to

secure the area.

“We wait,” he said, his voice grim. “We wait for the pack to get here, and we wait for the Council’s verdict. And we pray that we can find a way out of this mess.”

We got into the car, the silence heavy between us. I could feel the tension in the air, the unspoken fears and worries. We knew what this meant between the werewolves and humans, we knew how

delicate things were. If this got out, there would be no stopping the war.

But we had to call Johnathan. He had to know that his son was dead. It was the right thing to do.

“Are you going to call him?” I asked, my voice a quiet whisper.

He nodded, his jaw set with determination. “I have to. He deserves to know.”

He took out his phone, his fingers hovering over the screen. He was hesitant, and I could

understand why. This was not a conversation he wanted to have.

He finally dialed the number, and put the phone on speaker. The phone rang, each ring a dagger to

my heart.

“Hello?” a gruff, angry voice answered on the other end. Johnathan.

“Johnathan, it’s Dominic,” Dominic said, his voice steady and calm, but I could hear the underlying

tension.

“What do you want, Dominic? I’m in no mood for your games. Have you found my son? Or are you just calling to waste my time?” Johnathan’s voice was laced with anger and impatience.

“We found him, Johnathan,” Dominic said, his voice heavy with sorrow. “I’m so sorry. He’s dead.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the line, a silence so heavy I could feel it through the phone. I held my breath, waiting for Johnathan’s reaction.

“What?” Johnathan’s voice was a choked whisper, filled with disbelief and pain. “No. No, you’re lying. You’re lying to me! Don’t you dare lie to me about my son!”

“I’m not lying, Johnathan,” Dominic said, his voice full of empathy. “We found him on the beach. He’s… he’s gone.”

I could hear the raw pain in Johnathan’s voice, a father’s agony. It was a sound that would haunt

me for the rest of my life.
