CHAPTER HUNDRED-FORTYFOUR

DOMINIC

My bones cracked in a familiar painful rhythm as my body contorted, my skin stretching and

tearing as fur burst through.

I fell to my hands and knees, a raw howl tearing from my throat as my face elongated, my jaw snapping as it reformed. The world shifted, my senses sharpening, the smells of the forest, of damp earth and decaying leaves, flooding my senses.

It was a brutal, messy transformation, a violent surrender to the beast within. It’s been years of practice, but it was never easy. It was a constant battle, a struggle to maintain control over the wolf that lived inside me. But tonight, I didn’t want to fight it. I welcomed the pain, the raw, primal power that surged through my veins.

I needed to run.

I burst through the back door of the pack house, my powerful legs carrying me into the darkness of the forest behind my home. The wind whipped through my fur, a cool caress against my overheated skin. The moon, a sliver of silver in the inky black sky, cast long, eerie shadows through

the trees.

I ran until my lungs burned, until my muscles screamed in protest. I ran until the rage that had been a burning inferno inside me was a dull, manageable ache. I ran until I was so exhausted I couldn’t think anymore, my mind a blessed, empty void.

I collapsed on a bed of moss, my great body heaving, my breath coming in ragged pants. I lay there for a long time, the forest a quiet, healing presence around me. I could hear the rustle of small animals in the underbrush, the hooting of owls, the whisper of the wind through the leaves. It was peaceful. It was what I needed. But it wasn’t enough, I still had to face the mess waiting for me at home, a mess that had nothing to do with the forest.

I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the gnawing anxiety in the pit of my stomach. I could feel the walls of my pack’s expectations, the burden of being their Alpha, their leader. I was supposed to protect them, to keep them safe. But how could I do that when I didn’t even know what we were

facing?

Hailey’s face swam in my mind’s eye, her blue eyes filled with love and worry. I had promised her I would keep her safe, but what if I couldn’t? What if I could keep her and our son safe?

I couldn’t stay out here forever, no matter how tempting the thought. I had responsibilities. I had people counting on me.

With a heavy sigh, I forced myself to stand, my muscles aching in protest. I took a moment to

orient myself, then set off towards home.

My feet moved swiftly and silently over the forest floor, the moonlight a dim, silver glow through the trees. I wondered if the moon goddess, our creator, was watching over us, giving her strength.

I shifted back, my naked body glistening with sweat in the moonlight. I walked the rest of the way home, the cool air a soothing balm against my heated skin. The house was dark and quiet when I entered. I could smell the faint scent of my pack, but they were all sleeping.

Hailey and Liam were upstairs, their heartbeats steady and slow. It was the only thing keeping me calm. I wore my clothes from earlier, a worn pair of jeans and a dark t-shirt. My hair was a

disheveled mess.

I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. The ice cold liquid was a welcome relief against my parched throat. I stood at the window, staring out into the darkness, trying to collect my thoughts.

The pack would have questions. They would be looking to me for answers, for a solution. And I

didn’t have one. Not yet.

I felt like I was standing on the edge of a precipice, the realization of my responsibility crushing me. But I had to be strong. I had to keep going. For the sake of my pack, for Hailey and Liam, and our future.

If I fell, so would everyone else.

“Dominic?”

I spun around to find Hailey standing in the doorway, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, her eyes sleepy but alert. She was dressed in a white silk robe that clung to her curves, her bare legs making my heart skip a beat. She looked like a fallen angel.

“Are you okay?” she asked softly, her eyes searching mine.

“I’m fine,” I lied.

“Liar,” she whispered, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Talk to me.”

I closed the distance between us, pulling her into my arms, burying my face in her hair, breathing in her sweet, familiar scent. I felt her body relax against mine, her arms circling my waist. We stayed like that for a long time, just holding each other, drawing comfort from each other’s presence.

“We need to find out what happened,” I said finally, my voice muffled against her hair. “We need to find the truth.”

“We will,” she said, her voice a soft reassurance. “Together.”

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. She pulled back, looking up at me, her gaze filled with love

and determination.

“No one’s going to take you away from us, Dominic,” she said, her words a promise, a vow. “I won’t
