CHAPTER HUNDRED-FORTYFIVE-1

DOMINIC

The council were back again. This time, their faces were a mask of neutrality, but I could feel the hostility simmering beneath the surface. They were like sharks circling their prey, and we were the

bleeding chum in the water.

They had already taken over the dining room, transforming it into a makeshift command center. Laptops whirred, printers spat out documents, and phones buzzed with a constant, irritating hum. The air was thick with the sterile scent of coffee and takeout food. Our home, our sanctuary, had

been violated.

Beatrice sat at the head of the table, her fingers steepled, her cold, blue eyes fixed on the screen of her laptop. The lawyer, whose name I learned was Mr. Davies, was on the phone, his voice a low,

persuasive murmur.

Adrian’s body still laid in the morgue. Johnathan had refused to have it transported to the

mainland, for reasons I couldn’t understand. He wanted the autopsy done here, on this island. He

wanted to be close to his son.

Fenris was standing by the window, looking out at the forest, his back to the room. He was a strange mix of the two worlds, a werewolf who had chosen to aligh himself with the humans. He had always been a bit of a mystery to me, a wolf who had lost his connection to the wild, to the primal instincts that defined us.

I walked to where he was standing, determined to finally find out the mystery behind him. I had my own suspicions. He had been a part of the Council for as long as I could remember, a constant presence at the meetings, a silent observer in the background. He had never shown any allegiance to either side, always walking a fine line between the two.

“Fenris,” I said, my voice a low rumble.

He turned, his old, stern eyes meeting mine. There was a flicker of something in them, a hint of the wolf he once was, but it was quickly gone, replaced by the mask of neutrality.

“Dominic,” he said, his voice a dry rasp. “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it? A day for hunting.”

There was an irony in his words, a bitter, twisted irony that made my skin crawl. We were hunting for a killer, a monster who had invaded our home and shattered our peace. And he was treating it

like a game.

“You know, I’ve always wondered about you,” I said, my voice a low growl. “You’re a werewolf, but you act like a human. You’ve spent so much time in their world, you’ve forgotten what it means to

be one of us.”

He chuckled, a dry, rasping sound that was more of a cough than a laugh. “I haven’t forgotten anything, Dominic. I’ve just learned to adapt. To survive. Something you would do well to learn.”

“No. It would be me being a traitor to my own kind. And I would rather die than be a traitor.” My words were a challenge, a direct confrontation.

“Be careful with your words, Alpha,” he warned, his voice a low, dangerous growl. “You are in a precarious position. You have a lot to lose.”

I didn’t back down. “Don’t you think it’s quite a shame that the Council has a werewolf that doesn’t have a pack to call home? A lone wolf. A rogue.” I threw the words at him, knowing they would hit a nerve. A werewolf without a pack was an outcast, a pariah, a creature without a purpose, without a

home.

His eyes narrowed, a flash of anger in their depths. “I have a pack. The Council is my pack. They are my family.”
