CHAPTER HUNDRED-FORTYSEVEN
TRICIA
It felt like a cold bucket of water was poured over me. The hot headed, passionate anger that had fueled my defiance against my mother vanished, replaced by a chilling, crystalline fear.
The body. The human boy. Adrian.
They found him.
And the evidence will lead to me.
I stared at the lifeless body of James, the guard, a man who had just been in my arms, in my body.
The man I had been using as a plaything. The man who was now dead because of my
carelessness.
I felt sick.
I turned away from the sight, swallowing down the bile that rose in my throat.
My thoughts raced, a chaotic jumble of fear and anger. What the fuck was I going to do?
My mother was right. My only chance of surviving was if she covered this up, and I knew her. She would never do that. She has given me her conditions to help me, and the longer I took to meet her conditions, the angrier she would be. And an angry Adeline was a dangerous thing.
I quickly got dressed, trying to formulate a plan. I had to do something, and fast. I had to save
myself from this mess, and if becoming a traitor to Dominic was the only way for my own mother to save me from being prosecuted, then I had to do it. I never stood a chance against my mother to begin with, and even though this wasn’t how I expected my relationship with Dominic would go,
it was the only choice.
My mother was already waiting for me in the living room. She looked impeccable as always, her makeup and clothes flawless, not a hair out of place.
“Did you clean up your mess?” she asked, her voice cool and calm, her demeanor completely collected.
“Yes,” I lied.
“Good. Because I just got word from the Council. The body has been found, and they are starting an investigation. The sooner you start to do what I’ve asked, the sooner this will all be over.”
I felt the icy tendrils of fear wrap around my heart, squeezing it tightly.

“Do you have a plan yet?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Clam
“Of course I do. But I need you to follow my instructions to the letter. And if you screw this up, I’ll make sure you’re the one who ends up dead. So, don’t fuck it up.”
Her words sent a chill down my spine.
“You’ll be going back to the pack. And you’ll be helping me to get what we need.”
“How am I going to do that?”
“By whatever means necessary. And don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get what you want. You’ll have
your precious Dominic if you cooperate.”
A flicker of hope flared in my chest. “He’ll never forgive me for this,” I said, my voice shaking.
“It’s a small price to pay, don’t you think? Your life or your pride. It’s a simple choice.”
I swallowed hard, knowing she was right. And now was the time to make a decision. I had to choose between saving my own life or holding on to some vain hope that Dominic and I could be
together.
“Okay,” I said, my voice trembling. “I’ll do it.”
“Good girl,” my mother said, a satisfied smile on her face. “And your case has been solved already. Fortunately for you, the autopsy doctor is one of my friends, so the results would lead the Council to the conclusion that the person behind the murder was the rogue vampire who killed the human. It was a good thing we took him before he could run back and tell the Council about you. Now, you have nothing to worry about. Just do as I say, and you’ll be fine.”
“You mean, you already found a solution to this but still manipulated me into doing your bidding?”
“Oh, come on, it was fun, don’t you think?” she said, a cruel smile playing on her lips. “Now, let’s go and tell the Council that the case has been solved. Let’s pretend you’ve been the good girl and the whole thing was just a mistake. We found a rogue vampire to pull all the blame on, and the idiot has been on a killing spree so the Council won’t question us. That’s a win win situation.”
I clenched my fists, the fury building inside me, but I forced myself to keep a lid on it. There would be a time and place for anger, and now was not the time.
“What about the elders? Don’t you think they’ll find it suspicious if I suddenly went from being their
main suspect to suddenly solving the case?”
“Oh, please, those old fools wouldn’t know a real vampire if it bit them in the ass. They’ll believe whatever we tell them. All we have to do is make sure that the rogue vampire is prosecuted and dealt with, and everyone will be happy. Now, are you ready to play your part, daughter?”

I nodded, a tight jerky movement. “Let’s do this.”
And I had made a deal with the deal. My mother was the devil, and I was her willing servant.
Everyone who has ever made a deal with my mother, they’ve either lost their soul or ended up
dead. But the difference was, I was her flesh and blood.
And no matter how far away I ran, how deep I hid, she would always find me. She would always drag me back.
She would never let me go.
I was a prisoner of her making, a slave to her will.
This only made my hatred for her run deep and strong. No matter how evil or wicked a mother could be, how could she ever do this to her own child?
The only consolation I had was the fact that my worst fear, my biggest nightmare, had not happened. I had gotten away with Adrian’s death, no one knew it was me. No one had seen through my facade.
