Valerie and Giovanni were coming back from the hospital with the new baby today and we were preparing a huge feast for their return.

The whole pack has gotten news that the Alpha’s brother, (the beta) and one of the pack’s most cherished members has welcomed a new baby. The whole family was beyond overjoyed.

But Liam, his excitement was over the top. One would think my son was the one having a baby. He had been asking me a million questions about the baby, and I had been trying my best to answer them all in a way that a six year old could understand.

“Mom, is the baby going to have a name?” he asked for what felt like the hundredth time.

“Yes, sweetie, he will have a name,” I said, stirring the pot of stew on the stove.

“Will he be able to play with me?”

“Not yet, honey. He’s too little. He’s just a baby.”

“But I want to play with him now.”

“I know, baby. But you have to wait until he’s a little bigger. He’s just a tiny baby, and he needs to sleep and eat and grow.”

“Can I hold him?”

“Yes, you can hold him, but you have to be very gentle. He’s very fragile. He’s not like your toys.”

“I’ll be very gentle,” he said, his eyes wide with excitement. “I promise.”

“I know you will,” I said, smiling.

I looked around the kitchen, taking in the chaotic scene. Pack members were bustling about, preparing food, decorating the house, and setting up tables in the backyard. The air was filled with the smell of delicious food and the sound of laughter and chatter. Ive been in the kitchen all morning, preparing Valerie’s favorite meals, with the help of a few pack members. I made her a huge pot of chicken and dumplings, a pan of mac and cheese, and a batch of her favorite chocolate chip cookies. I wanted her to feel loved and welcomed home. I wanted her to know that she was not alone, that she had a family that would always be there for her.

I made sure to add the meals that she couldn’t eat when she was pregnant that she’d absolutely been dying to have. The ones with the runny eggs, the sushi, the soft cheeses. I knew she would appreciate it.

Valerie looked tired, but happy. Her hair was a mess, and she had dark circles under her eyes, but she was glowing. Her eyes immediately lit up as she looked around the room. She was finally home, and she was surrounded by her family.

Giovanni was right behind her, carrying the baby in his car seat. He looked tired too, but he was beaming with pride.

I rushed to them, wrapping Valerie in a warm hug.

“Welcome home,” I said, my voice choked with emotion. “We missed you so much.”

It’s only been twenty four hours, but it felt like an eternity.

“We missed you too,” she said, her voice a little hoarse. “It’s good to be home.”

Liam ran up to them, his eyes wide with curiosity.

“Can I see the baby?” he asked, his voice filled with excitement.

“Of course,” Giovanni said, smiling. He carefully took the baby out of the car seat, cradling him in

his arms.

Liam’s eyes widened even more as he looked at the tiny baby. “He’s so small,” he whispered, his voice filled with awe.

“He is,” I said, wrapping my arm around him. “He’s your new cousin, Liam.”
