CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTY-3
And I was so proud of her.
“He’s so beautiful,” she whispered, her voice filled with awe. “He’s so perfect.”
“He is,” I said, my own eyes filling with tears. “He’s absolutely perfect.”
Giovanni finally came out of his moment of shock and leaned down to kiss Valerie, then the baby’s head. He was a father. He had a son. He had a family.
“I love you,” he said, his voice choked with emotion. “I love you both so much.”
“I love you too,” she said, her voice a mere whisper. “Now, get me some ice chips. And a steak. A rare one. And please, for the love of God, tell me I can go home soon.”
I laughed, a genuine, heartfelt laugh. She was already back to her old self.
The doctor and nurses worked efficiently to deliver the placenta and stitch up the small tear Valerie had. I watched them, my professional mind taking over, but my heart was still with Valerie, with the new life she had brought into the world.
She was now a mother. She was now responsible for another human being. She was now a protector, a guide, a source of unconditional love.
I was a mother too. I had a son. I had a mate. I had a pack. I had a family.
We were so lucky.
I looked at Valerie, then at Giovanni, and then at the baby. I was so happy for them, so grateful for their happiness. Valerie was not just my best friend, but she was my sister. And she deserved all the happiness in the world.
We spent the next few hours in the delivery room, just the three of them and me, basking in the glow of new life. I watched as Valerie tried to breastfeed the baby, her face a mixture of determination and frustration.
“It’s not as easy as it looks, is it?” I said, smiling.
“No,” she said, sighing. “It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be.”
“But you’ll get the hang of it,” I said, reassuringly. “Just give it some time.”
“Thanks for being here, Hails,” she said, her voice sincere. “I don’t know what I would have done
without you.”
“Always,” I said, my heart swelling with emotion.

Dominic came by a few hours later, he has been so busy with pack duties that he couldn’t be there earlier. He walked in, his face a mask of exhaustion, but his eyes lit up when he saw me.
“Hey,” he said, coming over to me, and wrapping me in a hug. “How is she? How is the baby?”
“They’re both doing great,’ I said, my voice filled with pride. “She’s a warrior. And he’s a little angel.”
He walked over to the bed, and looked at the baby, a soft smile on his face. “He’s beautiful, Val,” he said, his voice gentle. “He looks just like you.”
“He looks like a wrinkly old man,” Valerie said, grinning. “But he’s my wrinkly old man.”
Dominic chuckled, and then turned to Giovanni, giving him a pat on the shoulder. “Congratulations,
man. You’re a father now. Welcome to the club.”
“Thanks, Dom,” Giovanni said, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s the best feeling in the world.”
I watched them, my heart full of love for my pack, for my family. We were a team, a unit, a force to
be reckoned with. We were stronger together.
And now, we had another addition to our family. Our family was growing, and I couldn’t be happier.
We left Valerie and Giovanni to bond with their new baby, and headed home. The drive was quiet, but a comfortable silence had settled between us, a shared, unspoken happiness filling the space.
I hoped our happiness never gets ruined again. I hoped this peace would last forever.
The house was quiet when we got home, the only sound being the soft hum of the refrigerator. Liam was already asleep in his room, and I couldn’t wait to tell him he had a new baby cousin to play with.
