CHAPTER NINETEEN–1

HAILEY

Giovanni’s body went rigid.

“Dominic isn’t like that,” he defended, hissing. “Don’t speak about what you don’t know about. You don’t

know the half of the story. So, stay out of it.”

I laughed humorlessly. “The Kings are the same. All the men are. Dominic, his father, you. It’s not about the

family, or the blood, it’s just in the blood. That’s why you’re all the same. That’s why I want nothing to do

with you or your family. That’s why I want to make my son forget he’s a King, and make him realize that his

life is not defined by his last name, or the empire his family built.”

“You’ve got a lot of nerve talking about us, and our family. But, remember, you were a King, too. You saw him, heard about his reputation, and yet still fell in love with him. What does that make you?”

“It makes me a fool,” I said. “But, a fool in love. There’s a difference. Love makes us do stupid things, but there’s a huge difference between doing something because you’re in love, and doing it because it’s right. I didn’t leave him, Giovanni. I wasn’t given a choice. He was my mate, and even if the relationship wasn’t good, even if we fought, even if he was a cheat, a liar, a murderer, he was my mate. My other half. I was willing to accept the bad things and forgive him. To stay with him. To raise a family with him. That was my dream. But, what did he do? He gave up on me, and our future the moment his ex came knocking on the door, the minute he stepped out of the door. He threw it all away. Now, if that’s not a coward, and a man who can’t love, then, I don’t know what is.”

“And you would have accepted it all? Everything?” He asked, and I nodded.

“If that’s what it took to have him, then, yes. I loved him blindly, and his flaws were like a thorn in my heart, but I accepted him for him. But, that’s not the kind of man Dominic is. He’s not a man who stays when things get tough. He’s a quitter. So, I’m not going to let him be a part of my son’s life.”

“You’ve gotten awfully confident, Hailey. I remember how you were before, and trust me, this is a big change. You’re a completely different woman.”

“I have to be, for my son. I can’t afford to be the same weak woman who always cried and was pathetic. I had to become stronger, for my sake and his. I’m not the woman you used to know, Giovanni. And that’s why I need you to promise me something…” I turned to face him, my eyes pleading.

“What is it?” He asked, not looking away from my face.

“Don’t tell him. Not until I’m ready. And when the time comes, and I can’t avoid it anymore, let me tell him.

Let me handle him.”

He was silent, his eyes searching mine for something. “You know, I could have sworn that you had changed. But, the old you is still there. She’s just been buried. The one who loved him, the one who would have done anything for him, she’s still there, and this is her way of protecting herself.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN 1

I didn’t reply, I didn’t know what to say.

You’re scared. You’re so fucking scared, and it’s all because of him. You’re so terrified of him, that you’re willing to keep his child away from him. What kind of a man do you think Dominic is?”

“A man who’s capable of leaving his pregnant wife for another woman,” I said, my tone cold.

“He didn’t know you were pregnant. You kept it a secret. For five years. So, don’t put the blame on him, when he was not the only one who did wrong.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN–2

I laughed bitterly. “And would me being pregnant have stopped him from going through with the divorce? Would it have made him realize he loved me and not his mistress? Or would it have made him come back and beg me to take him back? No. The divorce would have gone through, and I will be forced to let another woman raise my son and be his stepmother. I wouldn’t have been able to do that, not when she was the reason why he was leaving. How could you expect me to be happy knowing the woman who broke up our marriage was raising my son?”

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “I don’t know, because the past is the past, and we can’t go back. I can’t change my brother, and you can’t change his decision, so why are we even arguing about this? You’re wasting time, and the truth will come out anyway. Just accept it. This is happening.”

“No, Giovanni. Not if you do not say a word about this. Not if you allow your nephew and I live a normal life.”

“And what? Pretend this meeting didn’t happen? Act like you didn’t hide a child from Dominic and pretend everything is alright? I can’t do that. It’s not right, and you know it.”

“If you truly love Liam, and want him to be happy, then you won’t say a word,” I begged. “You won’t say a

word about this. I’m asking you this as a friend. I’m begging you, please. Just, don’t tell him.”

Giovanni was silent for a while, and he sighed heavily, running his hand through his hair, “Hailey, you’re

asking me to keep a huge secret from him. From my family. He’s never going to forgive me if he finds out I

knew about his son, and didn’t tell him.”

“And that’s why he won’t find out,” I said. “If you love your nephew, if you love him and care for his happiness, then, you will do this. Please. For me. For him.”

Giovanni shook his head. “If this blows up in my face, I’m going to blame you, Hailey. Because, trust me,

keeping this from Dominic isn’t easy. And when the truth comes out, it’s going to destroy a lot more than

just the relationship between you and him. It’s going to ruin the trust between Dominic and I, and my loyalty to him.”

“You’re right, and if it does, then, I’ll take full responsibility for it,” I promised. “So, please, let’s just forget

this conversation ever happened. We can act like this didn’t happen, and continue on with our lives.

Please, Giovanni.”

Giovanni looked torn, but finally relented. “Fine. But, I have a condition.”

I sighed, knowing this was going to be a difficult bargain.

“What is it?”

“I’ll be going back in a few days, so, you plan one last meeting between me and Liam, and we’ll pretend that this never happened, and I’m not his uncle.”

I sighed in relief. “Okay. Okay, deal.”

“Yeah?”
