CHAPTER TWENTY

HAILEY

Tomorrow evening came quicker than expected. And here I was in the kitchen, preparing lasagna,

meatballs, and other delicious meals for dinner.

Liam and Valerie were outside in the backyard, playing with his new soccer ball, and the kids from next

door.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of him, so carefree, and having fun.

After everything we’ve been through, after every challenge we’ve faced, and the road we’ve taken, it’s nice

to know that things were slowly getting back on track. I just needed this dinner over and done with, and

everything will be back to normal.

Just a little bit longer.

I heard some voices as the door opened and closed. “I didn’t realize just how sexy you were. That hideous

hospital coat and that frown hiding the gorgeousness.”

I rolled my eyes as I heard Giovanni’s voice from the living room. Being the flirt as always.

I heard Valerie mumbling and I can only imagine her blushing, and Giovanni probably grinning at her. I

turned off the gas cooker and walked to the living room.

“Uncle Gio!” Liam called, running into his arms. Giovanni swung him around and placed a kiss on his

forehead, making him laugh.

“Hey, buddy. How’s it going?”

“Good! Auntie V and I were playing soccer.”

“Oh yeah?” He asked. “You were kicking butt, huh?”

“Yep,” Liam replied, proudly.

“That’s my boy. Go put your ball away, and wash your hands for dinner. I’ll be there in a bit.”

“Okay, Uncle Gio,” Liam said, walking away, and disappearing down the hallway.

Anyone could tell he already has a soft spot for his nephew who he has barely known for twenty four

hours.

“Oh hello, Hailey. You look nice. And the food already smells amazing.”

“Thanks. Uhm, can you do me a favor, please?” I asked.

He cocked an eyebrow. “Ask away.”

“Can we not mention anything about Dominic? Especially not in front of Liam? I don’t want him to think or ask questions. So, just, keep your mouths shut about your brother.”

HAPTER TWENTY

“Fine, fine. Whatever you say, dear,” Giovanni said, grinning, and Valerie chuckled.

I nodded. “You both can go sit at the dining table. I’ll bring out the food.”

“Need any help?” Valerie asked, and I shook my head.

“I’ve got it. Thanks, though.”

“No problem. I’ll go help set the table,” Valerie said, walking towards the dining room.

I watched as Giovanni followed behind her, and sighed in relief.

Thank God.

Liam got in and I helped him wash his hands before the three of us sat down for dinner.

Dinner was filled with laughter, and a lot of talk, most of which was Liam. He was a social butterfly, and I

was grateful for the fact that he had such a warm personality.

Dinner has gone surprisingly well, and Giovanni thankfully didn’t say anything about his brother, and stuck to talking about work, and the different places he has traveled to.

We put Liam to bed a couple minutes ago, and we stayed sipping our wine. Valerie being the light headed lightweight that she was, was tipsy now.

I couldn’t help but notice the small glances Giovanni kept giving her, and her flushed cheeks whenever he

spoke.

I wonder what’s happening there.

It was finally time to leave, and Valerie hugged me goodbye.

“Why don’t you stay the night? I don’t think you should be driving.”

“I’m good. I didn’t drink that much. But, thanks. And don’t worry, I’ll get home safely.” I shook my head.

“I’ll drop her off.” Giovanni cuts in, looking at her. “Hailey is right. You’re not fit to drive. You can come pick your car up tomorrow. And I’m not taking no for an answer.”

Valerie blushed, her cheeks flushing a deep red, and her eyes averting his gaze.

“Uhm, okay,” she mumbled, shyly.

“Okay, let’s get going,” Giovanni said, placing his arm around her waist, and leading her to his car.

Valerie gave me a smile before walking out the door, and I waved.

These two were definitely on to something.

VALERIE

The drive to my house was filled with tension.

It was so awkward.

CHAPTER TWENTY

And I hated it.

“So,” he began.

“So,” I repeated.

“This is a pretty nice neighborhood,” he said, glancing around.

“Yeah, it’s not the best, but it’s nice.”

“It’s a great area. It’s perfect. It fits you.”

I didn’t know what to say, and opted for silence instead.

I felt like a teenager meeting her crush for the first time. It didn’t help that he was drop dead gorgeous.

“I didn’t know you were such a lightweight.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” I groaned, covering my face with my hand. “God, that was embarrassing. I can’t believe I let myself get drunk like that.”

He laughed, and I smiled.

“It was cute.”

“It was stupid,” I argued. “Who gets drunk on wine? Wine! It’s not even beer.”

“You’re overthinking it,” he teased.

“Maybe,” I mumbled, and he laughed.

“You know, I’m kind of sad that my vacation is almost over. I really enjoyed spending time with my nephew. He’s a sweet kid, and smart, too. Just like his mother. He’s going to grow up to be a great man.”

“Yeah, he’s the best. And he’s going to do amazing things. I just know it. Hailey is doing a great job raising

him.”

“She is,” Giovanni agreed. “And she’s a lot stronger than I thought.”

“She’s the strongest woman I know,” I said. “I’m proud of her, and how far she has come. And she’s scared you’re going to tell your brother.”

“She is,” Giovanni admitted.
