CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYTHREE-2

Her performance was flawless. A perfect picture of a grieving daughter, wronged and seeking solace. I had to suppress the urge to snarl. She was using her mother’s death as a tool, a weapon to get what she wanted. It was despicable.

And to think of it, how did her mother die?

“Your mother was banished for conspiring with you and kept me under your spell for years,” I said, my voice sharp. “She was a threat. Her death doesn’t erase the crimes she committed.”

“Nor does it erase yours,” Yasmine shot back, her eyes flashing with anger. “You and your mate have taken everything from me. My home, my family, my future. You sit here, high and mighty, playing the victim, but you are the ones who have destroyed my life. I deserve to be able to mourn my mother in peace.”

“Peace is something you know nothing about,” I retorted, my wolf bristling beneath my skin. “You came to my place of work, Yasmine. You threatened a newborn child. An innocent baby. Don’t you dare stand there and talk about peace.”

The room went silent again, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. The council members looked between us, their expressions unreadable.

“Is this true, Ms. Yasmine?” Alistair asked, his gaze fixed on her. “Did you threaten the child?”

Yasmine’s expression didn’t change. “I may have said some things in the heat of the moment,” she said, her voice a little too casual. “I was upset. I was angry. But I would never hurt a child. It was just words. Words spoken in grief.”

“Liar,” I snarled, rising to my feet. “You looked me in the eye and you threatened that baby’s life. You said he had enemies, that people would love to see him snuffed out. You meant every word.”

“Hailey, please,” Dominic said, placing a hand on my arm, a gentle but firm gesture. “Sit down.”

I wanted to argue, to fight, to make them see the truth, but I knew he was right. Emotions were the last thing I needed to be showing right now. I needed to be smart. I needed to be strategic. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to sit down, my hands clenched into fists in my lap.

“Alpha Dominic,” Alistair said, his attention back on my mate. “Do you have any proof of these allegations? Any witnesses?”

“I have my Luna’s word,” Dominic said, his voice low and steady. “And that is all the proof I need.”

“Your Luna’s word against the word of a grieving daughter,” Alistair countered, a hint of impatience in his tone. “It is a difficult position. The council must be fair. We must consider all sides.”

The unspoken words hung in the air. Your Luna’s word against the word of a grieving daughter with

“Fairness?” I couldn’t help but laugh, a short, bitter sound. “Is it fair to allow a known threat back into our home? To put my family, my pack, at risk because she’s playing the victim? Where was this fairness when she was manipulating the former Alpha? Where was it when she was tearing apart

families and disrupting the peace of this pack?”

“I was not myself,” Yasmine said, her voice soft, her eyes filled with tears. “I really regret all my actions from the past. I was young and foolish, blinded by love and my own ambition. I have

learned from my mistakes. I have changed.”

I had to give her credit. She was good. Very good. She had them eating out of the palm of her hand. I could see it in their eyes, the softening of their expressions. They wanted to believe her.

They wanted to believe in redemption, in second chances. It was a noble sentiment, but a

dangerous one.

“Changed?” I said, my voice dripping with skepticism. “Is that what you call threatening a baby?

Changing?”

“It was a mistake,” she said, turning to face the council, her expression one of deep remorse. “A

terrible, terrible mistake. But I am not a monster. I am not a threat. I am a woman who has lost

everything. My mother, my home, my reputation. I am not asking for your forgiveness. I am only

asking for a chance to grieve. A chance to rebuild my life. In peace.”
