CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYTHREE-1

HAILEY

It was finally the day of the council meeting.

The drive to the council headquarters was a silent one. The morning air was crisp, the sun still low

in the sky, casting a golden glow over the pack lands. I stared out the window, watching the trees blur past, my mind was a chaotic jumble of thoughts and fears. I was dressed in a simple black dress, my hair pulled back in a tight bun, my face free of makeup. I wanted to be taken seriously. I wanted them to see the fury and the determination in my eyes, not the softness of a pretty dress.

Dominic drove, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. He was dressed in a tailored suit, his expression grim. He looked every bit the Alpha, a powerful and imposing figure, ready for battle.

We didn’t speak. We didn’t need to. The unspoken understanding between us was a noticeable

thing, a current of shared resolve that flowed between us.

The council headquarters was a large, imposing building, made of dark stone and glass. It was a symbol of the pack’s power and tradition, a place where laws were made and justice was served.

Or so I had always believed. Today, I wasn’t so sure

We were met at the door by two large men in suits, their faces impassive, their eyes scanning us

with a professional detachment. They were the council’s personal security, a select group of

wolves known for their loyalty and their strength.

They led us down a long, narrow hallway, our footsteps echoing on the polished marble floor. The air was thick with the smell of old paper and lemon polish, a scent that I had always associated with my grandmother’s house. It was a comforting smell, a smell of home, but today, it did little to

soothe my frayed nerves.

We were led into a large, circular room, dominated by a massive oak table. The council members were already seated, their faces grim, their eyes fixed on us. There were twelve of them, six men

and six women, all of them old, all of them powerful. They were the pillars of our community, the keepers of our traditions, the guardians of our way of life. They were also, I was beginning to realize, a group of individuals who were not above being swayed by power and influence.

Then lastly, I saw Yasmine. She was seated at the far end of the table, a small, satisfied smile on

her face. She was dressed in a white pantsuit, her hair styled in loose waves around her face. She

looked like she belonged there, like she was a part of this world, a part of this power structure. It

made my stomach turn.

The head of the council, an old man named Alistair a wolf with a face like a worn leather map and eyes that had seen too much, gestured for us to take our seats. We sat down, our chairs scraping

against the floor, the sound loud in the otherwise silent room.

“Alpha Dominic,” Alistair said, his voice a dry rasp. “Luna Hailey. Thank you for coming.”

“We came as soon as we heard,” Dominic said, his voice calm, but with an undercurrent of steel.

“We were… surprised to receive your summons. Especially given the circumstances.”

Alistair’s gaze drifted towards Yasmine, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “Yes, well. There have been… developments. Ms. Yasmine has brought forth a petition. A request to have her

banishment reconsidered.”

A murmur went through the room, a ripple of whispers that was quickly silenced by a sharp look

from Alistair.

Dominic and I shared a look. We were right after all How predictable. She had found her allies.

“On what grounds?” Dominic asked, his voice dangerously low. “The banishment was a unanimous decision. A decree for the safety and stability of this pack.”
