CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYFOUR-2
Eleanor was quiet for a moment, thinking. “Her mother, Seraphina… she was a clever one. Manipulative, yes, but also meticulous. She kept records of everything. Not official records, of course. Personal ones. journals. I remember seeing them when we were cataloging her personal effects after the banishment. A collection of small leather bound books. I always thought they were dangerous.”
My heart leaped. “Do you still have them?”
“The council ordered them destroyed,” Eleanor said “But I have a hard time destroying history. Even the ugly parts. I… may have set them aside instead. They’re in a storage unit I have in town. Unlabeled, of course.”
“Eleanor, you are a lifesaver,” I breathed, a wave of relief washing over me.
“I’m loyal to this pack, Hailey. Not to the fools who sit on that council,” she said, her voice firm. “But those journals are old. The ink might be faded. And even if you find something, how do you prove it’s real?”
“I don’t know yet,” I admitted. “But it’s a start. Can you get to them? Bring them to the council headquarters?”
“It’ll take me some time, but yes,” she said. “I should get it in twenty minutes max. Be careful, Hailey. That girl plays for keeps.”
“I will,” I promised, ending the call.
I looked up at Dominic, who was just ending his own call. He walked over, his expression grim but determined.
“My guy is on it,” he said. “He’s pulling Seraphina’s death certificate, medical records, everything. He said he’ll have a preliminary report for me within the hour.”
“And I might have something too,” I said, quickly explaining my conversation with Eleanor.
A slow smile spread across Dominic’s face. “You’re brilliant,” he said, pulling me into a quick, hard hug. “If those journals contain anything that suggests a conspiracy, anything at all, it casts doubt on Yasmine’s entire story. It gives us leverage.”
The minutes passed in a tense silence. We didn’t speak, both of us lost in our own thoughts, our minds racing, strategizing.
Eleanor called first, my hopes rising.
“Hailey…” she said, her breathless. “There’s a problem.”
My stomach plummeted. “What is it?”

“They’re all missing. I drove to my storage unit and everything that belonged to Seraphina is all gone! Every last box!”
My blood ran cold. This was not a coincidence. Yasmine was not just a good actress; she was a step ahead of us. “She took them,” I said, the words a venomous whisper. “She knew. She knew we
might look for them.”
“It seems likely,” Eleanor agreed, her voice heavy with disappointment. “I’m so sorry, Hailey. I failed
you.”
“No, you didn’t,” I said, my mind already working, a new plan forming. “You did exactly what I asked. You’ve given me the final piece of the puzzle. Thank you, Eleanor.”
I hung up and turned to Dominic, my expression hard. “The journals are gone. Yasmine got to
them.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened. “She’s covering her tracks Which means there’s something in those
journals she doesn’t want us to see.”
“We can only hope that your last resort works,” I said.
Just then, Dominic’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his expression unreadable. “It’s my
PI.”
He put the phone on speaker, his gaze locked with mine.
“I’ve got something, Alpha,” the PI’s voice was a low gravelly rasp. “It’s not good. The official report
says Seraphina died of natural causes in a private care facility in Nevada. Heart failure. Open and
shut. They struggled to raise the hospital bills, she could use that as part of her sob story when we
go back in there.”
My heart sank. So much for that plan.
We had underestimated Yasmine’s ability to cover her tracks. She wasn’t just a manipulator, she
was a strategist. She had planned this meticulously
“That’s it? That’s all you’ve got?” Dominic asked, his frustration evident.
“Unfortunately. That’s all I’ve got. If there’s any loophole to this, she’s hiding it pretty well.” the PI
said.
“Thanks,” Dominic said, his voice tight. He ended the call, and the silence in the room was deafening.
We were out of options. We had no proof, no leverage. All we had was our word against hers. And in a room full of old, sentimental wolves who wanted to believe in a happy ending, that wasn’t enough.
