CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYSEVEN-1
HAILEY
I decided to make her feel safe. To make her think she had won. I had a feeling that the more
confident she became, the more careless she would be. So, I played my part.
The next day, I was at the community center, helping to organize the annual Harvest Festival. I was laughing, chatting, my every move designed to project an image of a Luna who was unbothered, secure in her position. And then, Yasmine walked in
She was carrying a box of homemade jam, a bright, sunny smile on her face. “I hope I’m not intruding,” she said, her voice soft and hesitant. “I just wanted to help. The Harvest Festival was
always my favorite time of year.”
The room went silent. All eyes were on me, on her. This was a test. My reaction would set the tone for the rest of the pack. I forced a smile, my lips feeling stiff and unnatural.
“Of course not, Yasmine,” I said, my tone light and friendly. “We can always use an extra pair of
hands. It’s good to have you back.”
The words tasted like ash in my mouth, but the effect was immediate. The tension in the room eased, and a few of the women even smiled at Yasmine. I detested their gullible, foolish hearts.
Yasmine’s eyes met mine, and for a split second, the mask slipped. I saw a flash of surprise, followed by a glimmer of something else. Contempt. She thought I was weak. She thought I had given up. She had no idea I was letting her get closer, so I could slit her throat.
“Thank you, Luna,” she said, her voice thick with false gratitude. “That means the world to me.”
I watched her as she moved through the room, her every gesture a masterpiece of performance.
She was charming, helpful, and utterly convincing. She was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and I was the only one who could see the teeth.
But as I watched her, I saw something else. A small almost imperceptible detail. A silver ring on
her right hand. A thin, simple band with a small, intricately carved symbol on it. I didn’t recognize the symbol, but I knew I had seen it before. Not on her, but on someone else. Someone from her
past.
My mind raced, trying to place it. An old friend? A family member? Or someone more… sinister?
I discreetly pulled out my phone and snapped a quick photo, my heart pounding in my chest. It wasn’t much, but it was a lead. A crack in her perfect facade.
That night, I showed the photo to Dominic. “Do you recognize this?” I asked, my voice low.
He peered at the screen, his brow furrowed in concentration. “No,” he said, shaking his head.

“Should I?”

“I think so,” I said, my mind still working. “It’s faint, but I remember it. From a case file. An old one.
From before we were together. A missing person’s case. A young woman, a witch, who vanished
from a neighboring territory. She was wearing a ring just like this. It was a coven symbol.”
Dominic’s eyes widened. “A coven? You think Yasmine has joined a coven?”
“It would explain a lot,” I said. “Her resources, her confidence. She’s not working alone. She has
backup. Powerful backup.”
This changed everything. We weren’t just dealing with a manipulative ex pack member. We were
dealing with a coven of witches. A coven that had an interest in our pack, in our family. Yasmine’s
power may have been a problem, but now she had brought more. This was no longer a family
