CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYSEVEN-2
While Dominic made the call, I went to check on Phoenix. He was sleeping peacefully in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling with each breath. I watched him, my heart aching with a fierce, protective love. I would do anything to keep him safe, to keep this darkness from touching him. I
knew deep down Valerie was worried about his safety, but she has nothing to worry about.
I felt Dominic’s arms wrap around me from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder. “He’s so small,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “So vulnerable.”
“That’s why we have to end this,” I said, my voice firm. “Once and for all.”
The next morning, Dominic had the files. They were old, digitized versions of the original reports, the text faded in some places. But there it was. A photo of the missing woman, a young witch named Rowan Blackwood. And on her finger, the same silver ring.
Her coven was one of the most inhumane covens around, according to the file. They were known for practicing forbidden magic, for drawing power from negative emotions, from pain and suffering. They were a plague, a cancer that spread silently, leaving only destruction in their wake.
“They’re called the Shadow Coven,” Dominic said, his voice grim. “And they’re bad news, Hailey. Really bad news.”
“They must have promised her something,” I said, my mind racing. “Power. A way back in. Something she couldn’t get on her own.”
“And in return, she’s giving them access to our pack” he said. “Access to you, to me, to our family.”
The thought sent a chill down my spine. Why would they want access to our family? What could they possibly want with us? Or even Phoenix. He was just a baby. An innocent, defenseless baby. But then I remembered what Yasmine had said. A perfect little vessel.
The words echoed in my mind, a horrible, terrifying possibility. Was that their plan? To use Valerie’s son as a vessel for their dark magic? To corrupt him, to turn him into one of them?
I couldn’t let that happen. I wouldn’t let that happen
“We have to expose her,” I said, my voice shaking with a fury I had never felt before. “I don’t know what she is planning but it’s not good. She will pay for her crimes. And we will find out what she has done to her mother.”
The problem was, how? We couldn’t just walk up to her and accuse her of being in league with a coven of dark witches. We needed proof. Something irrefutable. Something that would shatter her carefully constructed persona.
A ring isn’t just something we can hang her on.

I had to be patient, to wait for her to make a mistake. To get careless. And I had a feeling that
mistake was coming. She was getting bolder, more confident. She thought she had won. And when people think they’ve won, they get sloppy.
She could easily deny not knowing the history behind her ring and we would be stuck. The council
would think we are desperate and making things up. They would think we were doing everything
possible to paint her bad, therefore confirming that we are insecure about something. They
wouldn’t take any of our claims seriously, because they would feel as though we didn’t accept their
decision, and in turn, we are questioning their authority. If we were going to do this, we had to be
sure.
I went upstairs to take a warm shower. I’ve been on edge with Yasmine’s return so much that I
haven’t had the chance to relax. I knew Dominic and I had to find a way to get the council on our
side, but right now we had nothing.
The hot water beat down on my shoulders, and I closed my eyes, trying to wash away the stress
and tension. I thought about Yasmine, about the Shadow Coven, about the threat they posed to my
family. I thought about Liam and Phoenix, about their innocence, about the future we had dreamed
of for them.
My muscles were so stiff from the stress and as I went to grab my loofah, I lost my footing, and my
elbow banged against the wall. The sudden, sharp pain was a jolt, a reminder that I was still alive,
still fighting. I winced, rubbing the sore spot, a curse on my lips. I felt so clumsy and careless. I got
out of the shower, wrapping a towel around my body as I walked into the bedroom.
Dominic was sitting on the edge of the bed, a concerned look on his face. “You okay?” he asked. “I
heard a thud.”
“Just my clumsy self,” I said, forcing a smile. “I’m fine.”
He stood up and walked over to me, his hands gently tracing the bruise that was already forming
on my elbow. “You’re not fine, Hailey,” he said, his voice low and serious. “You’re carrying the weight
of the world on your shoulders. You need to rest.”
“I will,” I promised. “As soon as this is over.”
“It will never be over,” he said, his gaze intense. “There will always be another threat, another battle.
But we can’t let it consume us. We have to find moments of peace, of joy. We have to hold onto
each other, to what matters.”
He was right. I was so focused on the fight, on the enemy, that I was forgetting to live. I was
forgetting to love, to laugh, to just be. I leaned in and kissed him, a slow, tender kiss that was full of
