CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYNINE-1
HAILEY
The community pool was buzzing with activity the next afternoon. Kids were splashing in the
water, their laughter echoing off the walls, their parents keeping a watchful eye. It was a beautiful day, the sun high in the sky, a gentle breeze carrying the scent of chlorine and freshly cut grass.
Valerie and I were sitting on the sidelines, watching as the kids played in the shallow end, a safe
distance away from Yasmine. She was swimming laps, her long, lithe body cutting through the
water with ease. It was a stark reminder that she was not a simple, ordinary pack member. She
was a predator, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
“You shouldn’t have agreed to this, Hailey,” Valerie said, her voice laced with worry. “I don’t get what
you are trying to prove by putting yourself in this situation.”
“I’m not trying to prove anything,” I said, my tone calm and even. “I’m trying to show her that I am
not scared. That she doesn’t have power over me. That’s how we beat her, Val. We deny her the
one thing she craves the most.”
“And what’s that?” Valerie asked, her gaze fixed on Yasmine.
“Our fear,” I said, my voice a low murmur.
Valerie nodded, her eyes still tracking Yasmine’s movements. “She’s a good swimmer,” she
commented, her tone neutral.
“She’s a lot of things,” I said, my own gaze never leaving Yasmine. “Good is not one of them.”
We fell into a tense silence, the only sounds the splashing of water and the distant laughter of
children. Then, I saw it. A small, subtle gesture that made my blood run cold. Yasmine had finished
her laps and was now standing at the edge of the pool, talking to one of the pack mothers. As they
spoke, she made a small, almost imperceptible sign with her right hand. The sign of the Shadow
Coven.
The pack mother, a woman named Brenda, nodded a flicker of understanding in her eyes. She
then looked over at me, her expression a mixture of pity and contempt.
My breath caught in my throat. She wasn’t just man pulating the pack with her sob story. She was
actively recruiting them. She was building an army, right under our noses.
I discreetly pulled out my phone, my heart pounding in my chest. I didn’t take a picture this time. I
didn’t need to. The image was burned into my memory. I sent a quick text to Dominic.
She’s here. At the pool. She just made the sign. Brenda saw it. She knows.
A few moments later, my phone buzzed with his reply.

I put my phone away, my hands trembling slightly. I had to keep it together. I had to act like I hadn’t seen anything, like I was just a concerned mother enjoying a day at the pool with her family. But it was hard. Harder than anything I had ever done. My wolf was snarling inside me, a primal urge to protect, to attack, to rip out the throat of the threat that stood so close to my children.
Yasmine swam over to the shallow end, her movements fluid and graceful. She smiled at Liam and Phoenix, who were busy building a precarious tower with floating pool toys.
“Need some help with that?” she asked, her voice dripping with false sweetness.
“We’re fine,” I said, my tone clipped.
“Don’t be so territorial, Hailey,” she said, her smile widening. “I’m just trying to be friendly. Isn’t that
the whole purpose of inviting me here?”
“I don’t need your friendship, Yasmine,” I said, my gaze unwavering. “Just because I’m allowing you
to be here, doesn’t mean that I want your company. This is for them, not you.”
