CHAPTER HUNDRED-FIFTYEIGHT-2

And she was right. I couldn’t refuse. Not without playing right into her hands.

“Fine,” I said, the word tasting like poison in my mouth. “Tomorrow. At the community pool. But let’s get one thing straight, Yasmine. This is not a truce. This is not a ceasefire. This is me allowing you to be present in a public space, where I can keep an eye on you.”

A slow, triumphant smile spread across her face. “Fair enough, Luna,” she said, the title a deliberate insult. “Fair enough.”

With a final, lingering look, she turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, my blood running cold. What was she doing? Why was she trying to be nice to me now? What was she planning? The question was like a splinter in my mind, a constant, irritating presence that I couldn’t ignore.

“Who was that, Mommy?” Liam asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“Just someone from the pack, sweetie,” I said, forcing a smile. “Honey, anytime you see that lady and me or you daddy are not close by, I need you to run away and find a trusted adult. I don’t want you to talk to her unless we are there, okay?” I wasn’t going to beat around the bush. My son needed to know who the enemy was.

“But she seemed nice,” he said, his innocence a painful reminder of the stakes.

“Sometimes people aren’t as nice as they seem. Your daddy is a very strong and powerful man and he has lots of enemies. You can’t trust just anyone, okay? You’re the son of an Alpha, a great one. That means you have to be careful always.”

He looked at me, his small face serious. “Okay, Mommy,” he said, his voice firm. “I’ll be careful.”

My heart ached for him. For the childhood he was losing, the innocence that was being stolen by this never ending war. But I would not apologize for it. I would teach him to be strong, to be vigilant, to survive.

He was born into a world of predators and I will be damned if I let him be the prey.

That night, Dominic and I stood in our bedroom, the door shut. I told him about Yasmine’s proposal, about my reluctant agreement.

“She’s testing you,” he said, his jaw tight. “She wants to see how far she can push you, how much she can get away with.”

“I know,” I said, pacing the room. “But what’s her endgame? What does she hope to gain from this?”

“An opportunity,” he said, his gaze intense. “To paint herself a saint. To paint you a villain. If you slip up, if you say one wrong thing, she’ll use it against you. She’ll twist it, turn it into a story of the cruel,

“She’s a master manipulator, Dom,” I said, stopping in front of him. “She’s playing chess while we’re playing checkers.”

“Then we need to change the game,” he said, his hands cupping my face, his thumbs gently stroking my cheeks. “We need to beat her at her own game.”

“How?” I asked, my frustration bubbling over. “She’s always ten steps ahead. She has the council, she has the pack’s sympathy, and now she has a coven of dark witches backing her up. We’re fighting a war on too many fronts.”

“We’re not alone in this, Hailey,” he said, his voice firm. “We have Valerie, Giovanni. We have our family. And we have each other.”

His words were soothing, but they didn’t erase the knot of fear in my stomach. The fear that we were in over our heads, that we were fighting a battle we couldn’t win.

But I wouldn’t let that fear consume me. I would channel it, turn it into a weapon. I would be the
