CHAPTER HUNDRED-SIXTYFOUR-2

Another squeeze, this one a little stronger, a little more deliberate.

Tears streamed down my face, a wave of relief and happiness. He was in there.

And to our greatest shock, his eyes slowly fluttered open. He was dazed and confused, and he

couldn’t speak because of the ventilator, but he was there.

“Giovanni,” I sobbed, my hand tightening around his “You’re awake. You’re really awake.”

He was awake! Thank goodness. He was truly awake.

My eyes welled with tears, but this time they were tears of joy. I had almost lost all hope, thought I had lost him again the same way I lost my first mate, thought history was repeating itself and luck

wasn’t on my side for the second time, but this time, the moon goddess had answered my prayers.

The doctor and nurses rushed in and immediately got to worked. They checked his vitals, drew

some blood. There were whispers and hushed conversations, but all I could focus on was

Giovanni’s eyes. He was looking at me, a flicker of recognition in his eyes.

The doctor, a kind faced man with tired eyes, approached me after a few minutes. “This is a very

positive sign,” he said, his voice gentle. “But we need to be cautious. He’s still very weak, and there’s a long road to recovery. We’re going to keep him on the ventilator for now, to help him

breathe. But we’re going to try to get him to communicate.”

He turned to Giovanni, his tone calm and reassuring. “Giovanni, can you blink once for yes, twice

for no?”

Giovanni blinked once.

“Good,” the doctor said, a small smile playing on his lips. “Very good. Now, I’m going to ask you

some questions. Just blink your answers.”

The doctor went through a series of questions, testing Giovanni’s cognitive functions, his memory, his awareness. Giovanni answered them all correctly, his blinks slow but deliberate.

“We’re going to try something else,” the doctor said his expression serious now. “We want to know what happened. We want to know if you remember the accident. Can you tell us, Giovanni?”

Giovanni’s eyes darted to mine, a flicker of something, fear? urgency?, in their depths. He blinked

once.

“Do you remember what happened?” the doctor asked.

Giovanni blinked once again.

“Was it an accident?” the doctor asked, his tone neutral.

Giovanni blinked twice.

A collective gasp went through the room. It wasn’t an accident. I knew it. I knew it.

“Was it an attack?” the doctor pressed.

Giovanni blinked once.

“Did you see who did it?”

Giovanni blinked twice.

My heart sank. He didn’t see who did it. My one chance at getting proof, at getting justice, was

gone.

But it didn’t mean we weren’t going to continue looking for proof. We were still going to do it. And

we were going to find it.

The doctor looked at me, a sympathetic look on his face. “I’m sorry, Valerie. We can’t proceed with an investigation without a suspect. And we have no way of knowing if he’s mistaken or not.”

I wanted to scream. I wanted to shake him, to tell him that Giovanni was not mistaken, that I knew

who had done this. But I couldn’t. I had to keep it together. For Giovanni. For Phoenix.

Dominic stepped forward, his Alpha presence filling the room. “We understand,” he said, his voice calm and measured. “Thank you for your help, doctor. We’ll take it from here.”

The doctor nodded, and with a final, reassuring smile, he left the room, leaving us alone with

Giovanni.
