CHAPTER HUNDRED–SEVENTYSEVEN–1
HAILEY
The wave of nausea that hit me the next morning was unlike anything I’ve ever felt before, I was running
towards the bathroom, my hand over my mouth. I barely made it to the toilet before I was emptying my stomach, a violent, painful heaving that left me shaking and weak.
Dominic was there in an instant, his strong arms wrapping around me, a steadying force that kept me from
collapsing. He held my hair, his other hand rubbing my back in a comforting, circular motion.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, his voice a low, soothing balm. “I’m here. I’ve got you.”
When I was done, I leaned my head against the cool porcelain of the toilet, a wave of dizziness washing
over me. I felt so weak, so vulnerable, so broken.
He helped me up and led me back to the bed, my legs buckling beneath me. He lifted me into his arms as
if I weighed nothing at all, and laid me down gently, pulling the covers up to my chin.
“I’m calling Dr. Aris,” he said, a stubborn set to his jaw. “No arguments, Hailey. This is not stress.”
This time, I didn’t have the strength to fight him. I was too weak, too tired, too sick to care. I just nodded, a
silent surrender.
Dr. Aris arrived an hour later, a kind, elderly man with a warm, gentle smile. He had been the pack’s doctor
for as long as I could remember, a trusted and respected figure in our community.
He examined me, his hands gentle and sure, a series of tests and questions that were both thorough and
reassuring.
“Well, Luna,” he said, a small, knowing smile on his face. “It seems you’re going to be a mother again. You’re pregnant.”
The words hung in the air, a stunning, life altering revelation that left me breathless. I was pregnant.
Dominic was silent, a long, tense moment of silence that stretched on for an eternity. I could see the
shock in his eyes, a stunned, disbelieving look that was quickly replaced by a wave of pure, unadulterated
joy.
A slow, wide grin spread across his lips, a look of such profound happiness that it made my heart ache. He
was going to be a father again. We were going to have another baby.
“I’m going to be a father,” he said, a disbelieving laugh escaping his lips. He pulled me into a tight, fierce
embrace, a joyous, exuberant hug that was both a celebration and a declaration. “For the second time.”
I was happy. I was. A part of me was overjoyed, a fierce, maternal instinct kicking in, a wave of love for a child I hadn’t even met yet. But another part of me was terrified. I was scared. With everything that was going on, with a killer on the loose, with Tricia’s unexpected return, now was not the best of times to bring a baby into the world.
