CHAPTER HUNDRED–SEVENTYSEVEN–2
“We’ll handle it,” he said, a steely resolve in his tone. “We’ll handle all of it. Together. We’re a family, Hailey. And nothing, and no one, is going to hurt us. I understand that this isn’t the best of times but we can’t be picky with the goddess‘ gifts.” He said, a new found look in his eyes. He was right. I was being selfish. This baby is a gift from the goddess. Something we have been hoping and praying for.
“I know,” I said, a sigh of resignation escaping my lips. I was being selfish, I know. “It’s just a lot to take in.”
He leaned in and kissed me, a slow, tender kiss that was both a promise and a reassurance. It was a kiss
that said, ‘I’m here. I’ve got you. We’re in this together.’
“I love you,” he whispered, his breath warm against my skin.
“I love you too,” I replied, a small, genuine smile on my face. “We’re going to be a family of four soon. And you are going to be there through it all this time. Through the first to the last trimester, watch him or her say their first words, take their first steps, watch them turn into a toddler and you won’t miss any of it this time.” My heart swelled with love and a new found hope. Maybe this is what we needed. A new life, a new
beginning.
“I will,” he said, a solemn vow that was both a promise and a prayer. “I won’t miss a thing. All the things I
missed with our first child due to my foolishness, I won’t miss it for the world. I will be a better father this
time, and a better husband.”
I knew he would be. He had already proven himself to be a changed man, a better man. He was more present, more attentive, more loving than he had ever been before. He was the man I always knew he
could be, the man I fell in love with all those years ago.
We laid there for a long moment, a shared, comfortable silence settling between us. The world outside our
little bubble could wait.
We had decided that we wouldn’t be announcing the pregnancy to anyone for now. Only Liam. We wanted
to bask in the joy of this new life for a little while longer, to keep it to ourselves, to protect it from the
darkness that had consumed our lives. It was our secret, a precious, fragile treasure that we would guard
with our lives.
Later that day, we told Liam the news. He was ecstatic, a bundle of pure, unadulterated joy that was
infectious. He was jumping up and down, a wide grin on his face that absolutely warmed my heart.
“A baby sister?” he asked, a hopeful, eager look in his eyes.
“Or a baby brother,” I said, a small, playful smile on my face. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
“I hope it’s a sister,” he said, a thoughtful, pensive expression on his face. “Then I can protect her, just like
Daddy protects you.”
My heart swelled with a fierce, protective love. He was such a good boy, a sweet, caring, and
compassionate child that was a reflection of the man his father was becoming.
