CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHTYSEVEN-T

CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHTYSEVEN-1

HAILEY

Why has no one spoken about mom guilt? The guilt you feel when you think you’re not there for your child as much as you used to, and think they might be feeling neglected?

That’s what I’ve been feeling for the past few days.

I didn’t know if it was my pregnancy hormones, or the fact that I was welcoming another baby in a couple of months and Liam might feel like I was replacing him?

I felt horrible. Liam has always been my baby for the longest. Once upon a time, it was just me and him.

Carried his pregnancy through school, had him when I could barely afford to feed myself, but I had him, and I was ready for the world.

And now, it wasn’t just him and me anymore.

I just felt like I wasn’t giving him that special time and attention that I had been able to give him since birth. He was growing up and becoming more independent, but it doesn’t change the fact that he would

still crave some alone time with me.

“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Dominic asked, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “You seem upset.”

“I’m not,” I mumbled, trying to hide the tears that were threatening to spill down my cheeks. “I’m fine.”

“You’re not. I can smell your sadness, and you’re crying. Is it the baby? Are you feeling unwell?”

“I’m not sick, Dom,” I said, my voice breaking. “I’m just… sad. And a little bit lonely.”

“Lonely?”

“Yeah. I mean, with the baby coming and everything, I just feel like I haven’t had as much time with Liam lately. You know, it was just him and me in the beginning. We did everything together, and now, it’s like we’re growing apart. Like, he has you and the rest of the family, and I just feel like I’m losing him.”

“Oh, Hailey, sweetheart, you’re not losing him. You’re his mother, and nothing will ever change that. He loves you, and you love him. Nothing will ever change that.”

“But he doesn’t need me as much as he used to. He’s growing up, and I’m not going to be able to protect him from everything anymore. I just feel like I’m not there for him as much as I used to, and he might be feeling a little neglected. Like, why is he not spending time with me? What if he feels like the new baby might replace him, or that I’m not going to love him as much as I love the new baby?”

“Hailey, you’re being silly. Liam is not going to think any of that. You’re his mother, and no matter what happens, he will always need you. No one can replace you, no one can ever love him as much as you do. You’re his world, and nothing is ever going to change that. And I think you should talk to him about this. He might be feeling the same way. He’s a smart boy, and he knows that you’re busy, but he misses his mom. And I know that he would be more than happy to spend some quality time with you.”

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

“Maybe I should. We could go for a walk, just the two of us. He loves going for walks.”

“That’s a great idea, sweetheart. Maybe you could ask him about what he wants to do, too. I’m sure he has

some ideas. He’s a smart boy.”

“Yeah, he is.”

“And Hailey, no matter what happens, I’m always going to be here for you. Both of you. It might not seem like it sometimes, but I’m always thinking about you. Always. You’re the center of my world, and no one

can ever change that.”

“Your growth has been phenomenal, Dominic. You are not the same guy I met a couple of years ago. You’re a whole new person.”

He chuckled, the sound a low, warm rumble in his chest. “Well, I have a good teacher.”

I leaned into his touch, a sense of calm washing over me. “I love you, Dominic.”

“I love you too, Hailey. More than you’ll ever know.”

He kissed my forehead, the touch a gentle caress.
