I headed up to our room, my footsteps heavy on the stairs. Hailey was asleep, her breathing steady and calm. Her pregnancy was already starting to show, the curve of her belly a gentle reminder of the life growing inside her.

I climbed into bed beside her, careful not to wake her. I wrapped my arms around her, the familiar scent of her shampoo and the baby’s soft heartbeat filling me with a sense of calm.

“That’s the thing, Dominic. We don’t know. We’ve managed to trace the source back to a computer in the city, but the trail went cold there. Whoever they are, they’re covering their tracks well. But they’re not invincible. We believe they were also responsible for Yasmine’s death.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Think about it. Who else would benefit from Yasmine’s death? It’s the perfect opportunity to strike, with you and Hailey preoccupied with the pregnancy and the baby. It would have given them the perfect opening to take control of the pack, with the Alpha distracted and no clear successor in sight. And if the rumors are true, it would have been the perfect opportunity for them to get revenge on Hailey.”

“Revenge? What revenge?”

“The rumor mill is buzzing, Dominic. Some people are saying Hailey was responsible for the death of

Yasmine.”

“What? How have I never heard this before?”

“Fuck,” I said, the anger surging through me. “This is insane. How is this possible? Who the fuck is behind

this?”

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out. But whoever it is, they’re smart. They’re organized. And they’re dangerous.”

“How long have you known about this?”

“A few days. We were going to tell you, but we didn’t want to cause undue panic. Especially not when your wife is pregnant. But the situation is escalating, and we can’t wait any longer. You need to know, Dominic. The pack is at risk. We’re all at risk.”

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “Fuck. We need to do something, we need to shut them down.”

“We’re trying, Dominic. But we need more time. We need more resources.”
