CHARTERH INDRED FIGHT VEIGHT
CHAPTER HUNDRED-EIGHTYEIGHT-1
HAILEY
I started walking again, my pace a little faster than before. I didn’t want to scare Liam, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched. I looked over my shoulder, and for a second, I thought I saw a flicker of movement in the trees. A flash of red. But it was gone as quickly as it had appeared.
I told myself that I was being paranoid. That it was just my imagination.
I heard a few whispers from passerby, snickering as they looked at me. Some stared for a little too long before scurrying away, some openly pointed at me as they said some things I couldn’t hear. The guards shot them a warning glare, but they didn’t stop. They were getting bolder.
“Look at her, pretending to be so innocent.”
“I heard she pushed Yasmine off the balcony.”
“My source said she poisoned her.”
“I feel so bad for the Alpha, being married to an insecure murderer.”
The words were like daggers, each one a little cut, a little wound that I couldn’t ignore. My cheeks flushed with heat, my hands clenched into fists at my sides.
They thought I was responsible for Yasmine’s death? This was new. When did this ridiculous rumor start?
Who started it?
Why would they say such a thing?
“She’s so insufferable. How does the Alpha deal with her? I bet she pretends to be all sweet and innocent in front of him, but behind his back, she’s a monster. I heard she killed Yasmine because she was jealous
of their past.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if she was the one who tried to kill Tricia too.”
I froze, the words hitting me like a punch to the face. I had heard rumors concerning Tricia before, but they
had never been this bold, this blatant.
I looked at the guards, their faces grim and unreadable. They had heard the whispers too, but they were under strict orders not to engage. Their job was to protect me, not to start a fight.
“I heard she’s with children again. Goddess help those poor children. Imagine having a murderer for a
mother.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. I turned around, my eyes blazing with anger.
“Who said that?” I demanded, my voice a low, dangerous growl. “Who dares to say such things about me?”
The pack members who had been whispering about me took a step back, their faces a mixture of fear and defiance. They had been caught, but they weren’t backing down.

“What’s wrong, Luna?” one of them, a young woman with a sneer on her face, asked. “Can’t handle the
truth?”
“The truth?” I scoffed, my anger rising. “You call that the truth? You call spreading malicious, baseless
rumors the truth?”
“We’re just saying what everyone else is thinking,” another one, a burly man with a scar across his cheek, said. “You’re not fit to be our Luna. You’re a danger to this pack.”
“A danger?” I repeated, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “How am I a danger? By trying to protect this pack? By trying to keep the peace?”
“By killing anyone who gets in your way,” the young woman shot back. “Yasmine was a good person. She didn’t deserve to die. You dimmed the light in her life, the light in this pack. A powerful witch like her, gone, just like that.”
“Yasmine’s death was not my fault,” I said, my voice trembling with rage. “And you know it. You’re just looking for someone to blame, someone to hate. And you’ve decided to target me. Why? Because I’ve had issues with her? Even after her several attempts to kill me?”
“No,” the burly man said, his eyes cold and hard. “Because you’re a liar. You’re a manipulator. And you’re a killer. And we’re not going to stand for it. We’re not going to let you destroy this pack.”
“And what are you going to do about it?” I challenged, my chin held high. “You think you can take me on? You think you can defeat me?”
“We’re not going to fight you,” the young woman said, a smug smile on her face. “We’re just going to expose you for who you really are. We’re going to make sure that everyone knows the truth. And when they do, they’ll see you for the monster that you are. They’ll turn on you, and they’ll make you pay for what you’ve done.”
