CHAPTER HUNDRED-NINETYNINE-2
“Hailey,” he said, his voice a raw, ragged whisper. “You’re awake. Thank God, you’re awake.”
He reached out and took my hand, his touch a desperate, grounding force. His hand was cold, clammy,
and it was trembling.
“The baby,” I said, my voice a raw, raspy whisper. “Dominic, the baby…”
He immediately shook his head, “The baby is fine.” He said, as he squeezed my hand. “Our little baby is a fighter, just like I said they would be.” He said, as he wiped away a tear that was rolling down my cheek. “But that’s not why I’m crying. Hailey, when I got a call from Tricia that you passed out. Nothing prepared me for the condition I was going to meet you in. You were laying in a pool of blood, there was literally blood everywhere, it looked like a crime scene. I thought… I thought I lost you. I thought I lost both of you I thought I lost everything.”
He broke down then, his body wracked with a violent, painful sob. He buried his face in my hands, his tea soaking my skin. I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close, my own tears mingling with his. I cou feel the raw, agonizing grief in his sob, a grief that mirrored my own.
“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice a raw, ragged whisper. “I’m so sorry, Dom. I’m so sorry I scared you.”
“It’s not your fault,” he said, his voice a choked sob. “It’s my fault. It’s all my fault. I should have been there I should have protected you. I should have…”
“It’s not your fault,” I said, my voice a little stronger now. “I’m just glad the baby is okay. I was so scared. I was in so much pain. I didn’t understand why my body was doing this. I thought I was losing the baby, the pain was so much, it felt like I was going into labor. Did… did the doctor tell you what happened?
Dominic nodded his head, a look of pure, unadulterated fury in his eyes. “You were poisoned, Hailey You were poisoned with Aconite. They’ve been adding little drops of it in your meal for a while now. It’s a plant that is toxic to werewolves, and for a pregnant werewolf, it can be lethal. It can cause miscarriages. internal bleeding, and in some cases, death.”
My blood ran cold.
Aconite?
How? When? Who would want to do this to me? Who would want to hurt my baby? Who would want to hurt me? My mind raced, a chaotic jumble of fear and confusion The guards who served me my food? The maids who prepared it? Someone in the pack? Someone I trusted?
“Who?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest “Who would do this?”
“We don’t know,” he said, his voice a low, dangerous growl “But it’s most definitely an inside job. My wife isn’t even safe in my own home anymore. There’s a traitor amongst us But I have a few of my men on it Giovanni already has a list of names We’ll find them. And when we do, they will pay They will pay for what they did to you. They will pay for what they did to our baby.”
He paused, his expression a mixture of frustration and resignation. “The doctor was able to give you an antidote, but he said the damage was already done. The Aconite already did a number on you. Your womb is severely bruised and your placenta has already started to detach from your uterine wall. You are on strict bed rest for the remainder of your pregnancy, Hailey. You need to be very, very careful. Any kind of stress can cause you to miscarry. Any little thing. You and the baby are not out of the woods yet. Not even
close.”
He took a deep breath, his expression a mixture of fear and a fierce, unwavering love. “But we will get through this. We will get through this together. I promise. I’m not going to leave your side. Not until this baby is born. And not even after that. I’m going to keep you safe. I’m going to keep you both safe. I swear
it.”
I looked at him, my heart aching. Why did we have to be going through all of this? We already had so much going on, with Yasmine’s murder, Liam’s accident, the vampire threat, and now this. It was like the universe was conspiring against us, testing the very limits of our strength, our love, our sanity.
“I’m scared, Dom,” I admitted, my voice a raw, ragged whisper. “I’m so scared. What if I lose the baby? What if…”
