WARTER WOHUNDRED

CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED

HAILEY

His words were a desperate plea, a raw, ragged prayer. I could see the fear in his eyes.

He was the Alpha, the leader, the protector. But right now, he was just a husband, a father to be, terrified of losing the people he loved most in the world.

And I knew I had to be strong. For myself. For him. For our baby. For our family. I had to push past the fear, the pain, the despair. I had to hold on to hope, no matter how slim, no matter how distant. Because that was the only thing that was going to get us through this.

“Okay,” I said, my voice a little stronger now. “Okay, Dom. I’ll be strong. I’ll be brave. I’ll be positive. We’ll get through this. Together.”

He let out a slow, shaky breath, a wave of relief washing over him. He leaned in and kissed me, his lips a gentle, tender press against mine. It was a promise, a vow, a declaration of his undying love and devotion

to me.

Just then, there was a soft knock on the door. Dominic’s jaw clenched, the tension in his shoulders returning. “Come in,” he said, his voice a low growl.

The door opened, and Giovanni walked in, his face a grim mask of seriousness. He was holding a file, a thick, manila envelope that looked official and important. He was accompanied by our family doctor, a kind, elderly man with a gentle smile and a reassuring demeanor.

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” Giovanni said, his eyes flicking towards me, a flicker of sympathy in their depths “But we have an update.”

Dominic’s expression hardened, the soft, vulnerable husband replaced by the cold, calculating Alpha “What is it, Giovanni? Did you find something?”

“We did,” Giovanni said, his expression grim. “We found the source of the Aconite. It was in your herbal tea Hailey. The one you drink every morning. We had it tested. It was laced with a concentrated, slow acting form of the poison. Enough to cause severe damage over time, but not enough to kill you instantly. It was designed to be subtle, to be untraceable. Until it was too late.”

My blood ran cold. Herbal tea. I drank it every single day. It was my little ritual, my moment of peace in the morning. I loved the taste, the smell, the warmth of it. And someone had used it to try to kill me To kill my

baby

“Who had access to it?” Dominic asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble Who prepares it

“The kitchen staff,” Giovanni said, his expression grim “But we don’t know who in particular A lot of them

had access to it.”

“We need to question them,” Dominic said, his eyes dark with a cold, hard resolve All of them. Now I

want to know who was responsible for this. I want to know who was the last person to handle the tea leaves. I want to know who was the last person to brew your tea. I want names, Giovanni. And I want them

now.”

“Understood,” Giovanni said, his expression grim. “I’ll get on it. I’ll call you the second I have anything.”

He turned to leave, but Dominic stopped him. “Wait,” he said, his voice a low, serious rumble. “There’s

something else. Isn’t there?”

Giovanni nodded, his expression a mixture of frustration and resignation. “There is,” he said, his voice a low, serious rumble. “And it’s not good.”

He looked the doctor, who stepped forward, his expression a mixture of sympathy and professional detachment. “Hailey,” he said, his voice a gentle, kind rumble. “I have some… concerning news. The antidote we gave you, it seems to have had an… unexpected side effect. It seems to have… accelerated

the baby’s growth.”

My eyes widened in shock, my heart leaping into my throat. “Accelerated?” I asked, my voice a raw, ragged whisper. “What do you mean, accelerated?”

“The baby is now the size of a full term fetus,” Dr. Shaw said, his expression grim. “The pregnancy is essentially complete. The baby is fully developed, and could be delivered at any time. We’re not sure why this happened. It’s a rare, but not unheard of, reaction to the antidote, especially in cases of severe poisoning. The body goes into a sort of overdrive, trying to protect the baby, to speed up the development process. It’s a last ditch effort, a survival mechanism. But it’s also… a risk. A big one.”

He paused, and continued. “The baby is strong. The baby’s heartbeat is strong. The baby is… a fighter. But the accelerated growth has put a tremendous strain on your body, Hailey. Your womb is already bruised and your placenta is already detached. The baby is getting bigger, stronger, but your body is getting weaker. We need to deliver the baby. Now the baby is as big as an eight months old fetus. Technically, you have one more month to go until your due date, but the baby could be delivered at any point. We could induce labor, or we could wait for it to happen naturally. But either way, we need to be prepared. The next few hours, the next few days, are going to be critical. For both of you.”

The room started to spin, a dizzying, chaotic swirl of color and sound. I felt a wave of nausea wash over me, a cold, clammy sweat breaking out on my forehead. I was going to have this baby. Now. Today. Or tomorrow. Or the day after. The thought was so overwhelming, so terrifying, I couldn’t process it. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t prepared. I was still bruised, still weak, still bleeding. My body was a battlefield, and now it was expected to perform a miracle. To bring a new life into the world.

“But with enough rest and proper care, the baby could actually be delivered next month which is its forced due date. So Hailey, you need to be on complete bed rest. We are in the last few weeks, and anything can happen. I want you to relax your mind, because with the current state of your womb being bruised, and your placenta detaching, stress is something you cannot afford. Do you understand?” The doctor said, as he placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
