CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED ONE
CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-ONE-2
“They’re vampires, Dominic,” he said, his voice a low, urgent hiss. “They don’t have to make sense. They just have to be ruthless, and cold, and calculating. This is exactly the kind of shit they’d pull.”
“No,” I said, my voice a low, dangerous growl. “No, they don’t have the balls to try something like this. Not without a reason. Something set them off. Something set them off, and I’m going to find out what it was.”
“And when you do?” he asked, his voice a low, cautious rumble.
“Then we’re going to war,” I said, my voice a low, angry hiss. “This ends. One way or another, it ends. I’ve had enough of this. Enough of their games. Enough of their bullshit. This is going to end, and they’re going to pay. And when I find out who was responsible for poisoning my wife, I’m going to make them suffer. I’m going to make them suffer in ways they couldn’t even imagine.”
My heart ached as I looked down at Hailey, her body pale and weak, her face a mask of fear and pain. She
had been through so much, suffered so much, and she deserved better than this. She deserved better than
a pack full of traitors and liars, a husband who couldn’t keep her safe, a world where she was constantly surrounded by violence and death. She deserved a family, a happy life, a peaceful future. She deserved the
moon and the stars. She deserved everything.
But instead, she was stuck here, fighting for her life, fighting for the life of our unborn child. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. And it was my fault. I should have protected her. I should have been there for her. I should
have saved her.
But instead, I was failing her.
Again.
Hailey shifted in the bed, her brow furrowing in discomfort. I watched as she moved, my heart aching for her. Her stomach was swollen, her body ripe and ready for the baby, but still, her face was thin and drawn, the bruises on her body a constant reminder of the pain she had suffered, the pain she was still suffering. Her stomach had grown overnight.
She looked so small, so fragile, so vulnerable. I couldn’t stand it.
I had to do something. I had to protect her, save her.
But how?
I was so tired. Tired of the lies. Tired of the deceit. Tired of the endless battle. Tired of the fear, the pain, the guilt. I was tired of trying to hold it together, trying to hold it all together. I was tired of pretending that I was fine, that everything was fine. I was tired of pretending that I wasn’t afraid, that I didn’t have doubts,
that I didn’t have fears.
I was tired of it all.
And I didn’t know how much longer I could do it.
I didn’t know how much longer I could be strong.
“Hailey.” I said, my voice a low, desperate plea.
“Dom,” she said, her voice a soft, tired whisper
“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice a rough, ragged whisper. “I’m so, so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault,” she said, her voice a low, tired rumble. “None of this is your fault. It’s not. This is just…..
the way things are. We have to deal with it.”
“No,” I said, my voice a low, angry snarl. “No, we don’t. We can change it. We can change it all. We can fight
back. We can win.”
“I don’t know if we can,” she said, her voice a low, tired murmur. “I don’t know if we can keep fighting. It’s getting harder. Harder to breathe. Harder to believe. Harder to hope. It’s getting harder and harder to keep
going.”
