CHAPTER TWENTY–EIGHT
HAILEY
Everything was going well for the first three hours of working. I hadn’t bumped into anyone, or heard
anything about the Alpha.
I was actually a little shocked, but not as relieved as I would have liked.
Because the longer I waited, the more anxious I was.
“Are you alright?” Val asked, looking worried.
“Yeah.” I lied, checking the vitals of the patient in front of me.
“You don’t seem like it.”
“It’s nothing. Just tired.”
“You’ve been running around and not taking a break for the last three hours, Hails. It’s not normal. Go take
a break.”
“I will, once this patient is okay. Can you please page Dr. Bates and let him know that his patient is
awake?”
“Yeah, sure.” She said, and walked out.
I finished checking the vitals and made a note in the file, before getting the patient’s attention.
“You seem to be doing well. You’ve gained consciousness pretty fast, which is a good sign. Any pain or
discomfort?”
“Just a little. But, I feel fine. I’m okay, I guess.”
“Alright. Well, just stay put. I’ll be back in a bit to check up on you.”
“Thank you, Doctor.”
“You’re welcome.”
I left the room and saw Dr. Bates, a fellow colleague and the only friend I’ve made here, waiting for me. He was a handsome man in his mid thirties and had insisted I call him Richard, but aside from Valerie who I had made my best friend from working together, professionalism was something I took seriously, so I
decided to go with formalities.
“Is the patient okay?”
“Yeah. You can check her vitals and see for yourself. I think she should be discharged. She seems
perfectly fine. The scan results aren’t back yet, so I’d say we wait for the results before taking any
decisions.”
“Good. Thank you, Dr. Anderson. Can I call you Hailey instead? Sounds more informal.”

CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
I chuckled. “You can, if you want.”
“Good. And, you can call me Richard. No need to be formal. We’re colleagues, not enemies.”
“Okay. And, just letting you know, I prefer to be formal. Especially on the ward.”
“Understood.” He said with a smile. “How do you like the place so far?”
“I like it. It’s nice and quiet.”
“Yes. But, not really for long. Our town’s population is growing and growing, so more patients keep coming in. So, the hospital is pretty much full most days.”
“Oh, well. We have the facilities and the staff, so we should be able to handle it. And, that’s why we’re here, right? To help the people and save lives.”
“Right. You’re an amazing doctor, Hailey. It’s not just about having medical skills, you’re passionate and compassionate about what you do, and I admire that.”
“Thank you.”
“Did I employ the doctors here to flirt or do the job they are being paid to do?” A voice from behind asked.
My whole body went rigid, and my heart started pounding, making me feel dizzy.
I couldn’t move, nor speak.
Because, I was not prepared for this.
“Sorry, Alpha. We were just…”
“Save the bullshit, Bates. Get back to work.” He said, and turned his gaze on me, looking straight into my
eyes.
The mask was covering half of my face, but I still felt vulnerable, and weak.
And the feeling was not something I was comfortable with.
“Who is this?”
“This is Dr. Anderson, Alpha. The new doctor I was talking about.”
“What’s wrong with her?”
“N–Nothing. Why would anything be wrong with her?”
He stepped closer, and I stepped back.
“Those eyes…”
“Alpha! The meeting you requested is starting.” A female voice said from behind him.
I let out the breath I had been holding and felt relief washing through me.
“Tell them I’ll be there. Just give me a minute.”

CHAPTER TWENTY FIGHT
“Okay.”
I watched the girl leave and then my eyes were back on him.
He looked at me again, and his eyes were unreadable. Without another word, he followed the girl.
I waited for him to be out of sight before turning my attention to Valerie who had witnessed the whole
thing.
“Holy shit, is that him?” She asked, her mouth and eyes unable to believe what she was seeing.
“Yes.”
Char
“Holy cow. I mean, damn! No wonder why you’re attracted to him. He’s a fucking hot piece of a man. If I thought Giovanni was hot, then his brother is the whole package. Holy shit, girl. Your ex is hot as hell. Like, no wonder why you can’t get him out of your mind. Like, wow.”
“Val, focus.”
“Right, sorry. That was rude. What just happened?”
“I don’t know. He just showed up and demanded to know who I was, and it was like he knew me or
something. Do you think he recognized me?”
“No. That’s not possible. You have a face mask on. It’s not like he could see your face or something.”
“Well, his eyes were boring into mine, and it was as if he was staring right through me, like he could see the real me. And I tried to mask my scent like I’ve been doing since I arrived at the pack, do you think he
smelled me?”
“No, not possible. You’ve been wearing scent blockers and a mask. And the scent blockers have worked so far, so no. And I’m sure he doesn’t have your scent memorized. It’s not possible. The only thing he’d
smell was the bleach and hand wash.”
I nodded, a sigh of relief leaving my lips. “Yeah, maybe.”
“I’m sure. Stop worrying.”
“C’mon, we have a meeting to attend.”
The meeting couldn’t have gone faster, because I kept squirming under the Alpha’s intense gaze, and it
