CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-TWELVE
HAILEY
We arrived at the base of the mountain range, the trees looming like dark, ancient sentinels. We made our way up the narrow road, the forest growing thicker, the air colder. Finally, we arrived at the cabin. It was a small, rustic structure, shrouded in shadows. There was no movement, no signs of life. But I knew they
were inside.
Giovanni and his warriors moved like ghosts, their movements fluid and deadly. Valerie and I stayed in the car, our heartspounding in our chests. The tension was almost unbearable, a suffocating presence that
threatened to drown us.
The silence was suddenly broken by a gunshot, followed by a guttural scream. The front door of the cabin burst open, and Tricia emerged, a crazed look in her eyes. Dominic was behind her, his hands bound, a silver chain around his neck. She held a knife to his throat, the blade glinting in the moonlight.
“Don’t come any closer!” she screamed, her voice shrill and hysterical. “I’ll kill him! I swear, I’ll do it!” The warriors hesitated, their guns trained on her, their faces masks of cold fury.
“Let him go, Tricia,” Giovanni commanded, his voice low and dangerous. “It’s over.”
“It’s not over,” she spat, her grip on Dominic tightening. “You can’t have him. He’s mine. We’re meant to be. You can’t keep us apart.”
“Tricia,” Dominic said, his voice calm and even. “This is insane. Let me go.”
“No!” she screamed, tears streaming down her face. “I love you! I’ve always loved you! Why can’t you see that? Why can’t you choose me?”
He looked at her, his eyes filled with pity and disgust. “I don’t love you, Tricia. I never have. And I never will. You need help.”
His words seemed to shatter the last shred of sanity she had been clinging to. She suddenly pushed him forward, her face contorted with rage.
“Fine,” she hissed, her voice laced with venom. “If I can’t have you, then no one can.”
She lunged at him, the knife aimed directly at his heart. Dominic was quick, his reflexes sharp, but the silver chain around his neck made him slower, weaker. She slashed his arm, the blade drawing blood. The warriors fired their guns, but Tricia was fast, a blur of motion as she dodged the bullets.
“Hailey!” Dominic’s eyes widened as he saw me, his face a mixture of fear and anger.
I couldn’t hold back anymore. I sprinted towards him, ignoring the warnings from the warriors. I needed to be close to him, to feel his skin against mine.
Tricia saw me, her eyes flashing with a sickening glee. She launched herself at me, the knife aimed at my

belly. I brought out the gun I had kept hidden with me, pulling the trigger. We both hit the ground at the same time, a deafening silence descending over the forest.
We had both hit each other.
I looked down, the blood draining from my face as I saw the knife sticking out of my stomach, right where
the baby was.
Tricia’s lifeless eyes stared up at me, a dark pool of blood spreading beneath her. The bullet lodged itself between her eyes, instantly draining the life out of her.
Pain spread through my belly as blood began gushing out of me. My hands instinctively cradled the area, the metallic smell making me dizzy.
“No!” I heard Dominic’s scream, his voice echoing my own agony. My vision blood as he knelt in front of me, slowly taking out the knife and putting pressure on the wound.
“Hailey, look at me,” he commanded, his voice trembling as he tore his shirt to press it against my wound. “Stay with me. Stay with our baby. Please baby, don’t do this to me.”
I tried to speak, to tell him I loved him, but the words wouldn’t come. I could only stare at him, my vision starting to blur. The baby was kicking, a frantic, desperate movement, a sign of life, a sign of hope. But I could feel my own life slipping away, a cold, creeping darkness enveloping me.
“Hold on, Hailey,” Giovanni’s voice was a distant echo. “We’re going to get you out of here. The medics are coming.”
Dominic’s hands were covered in my blood, his face a mask of raw anguish. I touched his face with my bloodied hands, my entire body was trembling, instant coldness started to run through me and my teeth began to chatter.
“Please keep your eyes open! Hailey, please. Please don’t do this to me. You’re all I’ve got. You’re all we have. I can’t raise our children without you. Please.” he begged, his voice cracking with a sorrow so deep it shattered my very soul.
I wanted to stay. I wanted to fight. But my body was failing me, the blood loss too much, the wound too
deep.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against my forehead, a desperate, whispered prayer. “I love you,” he said, his voice a raw, broken sound. “I love you so much.”
I tried to say it back, but my lungs wouldn’t cooperate. My body began to convulse, the darkness taking over, pulling me into its depths.
“Stay with me, Hailey! Please!” His voice was fading, the world dissolving into a sea of black. The last thing I saw was his face, a picture of pure, unadulterated love, a love that would sustain me, even in death.
And then, there was nothing.
