CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-FIFTEEN

HAILEY

“Tone it down, son,” Dominic intervened, his voice calm but firm. “We’re just looking out for you. We know

how these things can get messy. We have been at peace with the vampires, but we all know they still hold

a grudge against your mother for killing one of them years ago.”

“I understand. But I’m not you. I’m not mom. They can’t hold me responsible for what happened in the past. I’m my own person.” He said, his jaw set with determination.

Dominic sighed. He was about to say something, but Aria came down.

“You are not going on a date with a vampire!” Aria shrieked, her face twisted with disgust.

“Aria, stay out of this.” Liam warned, his voice dangerously low.

“No! I won’t! You’re my brother, and I won’t let you make a huge mistake. Vampires are the enemy, Liam! They are manipulative, blood sucking leeches!”

“Aria, that’s enough!” I said, my tone sharp..

The tension in the room was thick enough to be cut with a knife. As much as they were no wars with packs and it’s been peaceful, well, my family definitely has a lot of wars within. My family wasn’t always peaceful.

“You’re one to talk. You’re the one who’s always sneaking out with that human boy. What’s his name again? Jake?” Liam shot back, a smug look on his face.

“He is not my boyfriend! And that is different! At least he’s not a vampire.” Aria defended, her cheeks flushed with anger.

“They are both our allies. There is no difference, Aria.” I stated, trying to keep the peace. I couldn’t help but notice the way Aria’s cheeks turned a deeper shade of red at the mention of Jake. There was definitely something going on there.

“Whatever. I’m leaving.” Liam said, grabbing his keys from the counter.

“Liam, wait. We’re not done talking about this.” I said, but he was already out the door.

The slamming of the front door echoed the finality of his departure. Aria stood in the middle of the kitchen, her arms crossed, her face a storm cloud of indignation. Dominic rubbed the bridge of his nose, a familiar gesture of weary patience he’d perfected over the years.

I turned off the stove, the pancakes suddenly forgotten. “Aria, go to your room.”

“But Mom-”

“Now,” I said, my voice leaving no room for argument. I didn’t need this. Not this morning. Not when the past I tried so hard to bury was suddenly knocking on my front door in the form of my son’s date

moment later, her door slammed with the same force as Liam’s. I let out a long, slow breath, leaning against the counter.

“A vampire from the Redwood pack,” Dominic said, breaking the silence. He wasn’t looking at me, but out the window, at the sprawling forest that was our territory. His voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of unspoken fears. “He gets that stubbornness from you, you know,”

“I was thinking he got it from you,” I countered, a weak attempt at humor. The knot in my stomach

tightened. “Do you really think they still hold a grudge? After all this time? For what I did to Tricia? Which

might I add, she absolutely deserved?”

Dominic finally turned to me, his blue eyes softening. He crossed the space between us in two strides, his hands finding my waist. “Baby, they will always hold a grudge. You killed one of their own, even if she was a psychopath who murdered their Queen. To them, it’s about pack loyalty. About blood.”

“I just… I don’t want him to get hurt,” I whispered, the admission tasting like failure. For years, I had fought to create a safe world for them, a world without the enemies and betrayals that had defined my youth. And now, my son was walking right back into the fire.

“I know,” he murmured, pulling me into a hug. His chin rested on top of my head, and I breathed in the familiar, comforting scent of him, pine, earth, and something that was uniquely Dominic. “But he’s not a kid anymore, Hailey. He’s eighteen. He’s the future Alpha. He has to make his own mistakes, just like we did. But I will talk to him. When he gets back. No arguments.”

I nodded into his chest, my fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. For a moment, we just stood there, a small island of peace in a house suddenly filled with teenage turmoil. It was moments like this, these quiet anchors in the chaos, that sustained us. Twelve years, and he still felt like home.

A shriek from upstairs shattered the moment. “Mom! Dad! Get in here! Now!”

We exchanged a look. That was Aria’s *I’ve found something I can use against Liam* shriek. With a shared sigh of resignation, we trudged upstairs, bracing for whatever new familial crisis awaited us.

Aria was standing in the middle of Liam’s immaculate room, holding his laptop open. She looked triumphant, like a hunter who’d just cornered her prey.

“Look,” she said, pointing a manicured finger at the screen. “Just look.”

I peered at the screen. It was some kind of social media page. The profile picture was a girl with blonde hair and piercing, unnaturally bright green eyes. She was beautiful, in very innocent way. Too beautiful. And too pale.

“So? She’s pretty,” I said, trying to remain neutral.

Aria made a gagging sound. “Pretty? Mom, she’s a vampire. Look at this.” She scrolled down. “Posted two hours ago. ‘Can’t wait for tonight.’ With a little bat emoji. A bat, Mom! She’s basically announcing she’s going to suck his blood!”

Dominic leaned over my shoulder, his brow furrowed. “Aria, that’s enough. Go get ready for school.”

“But-”

“Now,” he said, his tone brooking no argument.

She slammed the laptop shut with a defiant snap. “Fine. But don’t come crying to me when he comes

home with two tiny little holes in his neck.” She flounced out of the room, leaving a cloud of jasmine

scented indignation behind her.

I sank onto Liam’s perfectly made bed. The room smelled like him, clean laundry, deodorant, and a hint of the forest. “She’s dramatic, but she’s not wrong,” I admitted quietly. “What do we really know about this girl? The Redwood pack… they’ve always been proud. Aloof. They only allied with us out of necessity, after their own queen was murdered.”

Dominic closed the laptop, his expression thoughtful. “I’ll have Giovanni do some quiet digging. See what he can find out about this Emily. In the meantime,” he said, turning to me and pulling me to my feet, “we trust our son. We’ve raised him to be smart, to be strong. He knows our history. He won’t be easily

manipulated.”

He was right, of course. But knowing your child is smart and watching them walk into a potential minefield were two very different things.
