CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-SIXTEEN-1
HAILEY
The day passed in a blur. I went through the motions, managing pack logistics, attending a meeting with the council elders, but my mind was elsewhere. Every few minutes, I’d glance at the clock, a knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. Liam hadn’t come back. He hadn’t answered my texts.
By late afternoon, I was pacing in the living room, my wolf restless beneath my skin. Aria, home from
school and sprawled on the couch scrolling through her phone, was not helping.
“Maybe he’s already dead,” she said casually, not looking up from the screen. “Or worse. Maybe he’s been *turned*. Imagine. Our future Alpha, a vampire. How embarrassing.”
“Aria, I swear to the Moon Goddess, if you don’t stop, I’m taking your phone for a month,” I snapped.
She finally looked up, her expression unimpressed. “Relax, Mom. He’s probably just at her place. You know, listening to depressing music and talking about how immortal and misunderstood they are.”
The front door opened, and Dominic walked in, a grim look on his face. My heart sank. “What is it? What did you find out?”
He held up a hand. “Let’s talk in the study.”
Once the door was closed, he didn’t waste any time. “Giovanni got back to me. Emily’s real name is Emilia. She’s the daughter of the Redwood pack’s regent, Viktor. He’s been ruling since their old king… stepped down after his queen’s death.”
Viktor. The name sent a chill down my spine. He’d been Tricia’s staunchest supporter, a hardliner who always viewed werewolves as inferior. “He would never allow his daughter to date a werewolf. Especially
not our son.”
“My thoughts exactly,” Dominic said, running a hand through his hair. “There’s more. Emilia’s profile is clean. Perfect student, talented, beloved by her pack. But Giovanni has a source who says she’s… ambitious. I don’t want to assume the little girl is just like her father, but kids her age are sometimes more loyal to their parents more than they know. It’s a very delicate situation.”
He let the words hang in the air, their implication clear. We could be making a mistake of allowing our don get involved with a vampire, but we also could be totally wrong, and likely denying him the chance to know
a great person and fall in love.’s own words came back to me: Is there a problem with that?
“She could be genuine, Dom. She could be a girl who genuinely likes our son, and this could be nothing.” Dominic came to me, his hands gentle on my arms. “I know. And I hope to the Goddess that’s all it is. But we need to be prepared. We need to talk to Liam, and we need to be smart about this.”
Just then, my phone buzzed on the desk. A text from Liam.
‘Met her parents. Staying for dinner. Everything’s fine. Don’t worry.”

“Don’t worry,” Dominic repeated, a dark humor in his tone. “This fucking boy keeps testing my patience.”
“Babe, language.” I said, looking at Aria who was now standing by the door with her arms crossed. “What do we do now?”
“We wait,” he said. “And when he gets home, we have a very long talk.”
The waiting was the hardest part. Every creak of the house, every rustle of the wind outside, had me on edge. Aria, sensing the tension, abandoned her taunts and sat quietly, her own face etched with worry beneath her teenage bravado. For all her jokes, she loved her brother.
Finally, a little after nine, we heard the sound of Liam’s car in the driveway. Aria jumped up, but I put a hand on her chest. “No, go to your room. Let us handle this.”
Dominic and I stood in the foyer as the door opened. Liam walked in, and for a moment, I saw him not as my son, but as a young Alpha, confident and self assured. He met our gazes, and a flicker of something… defiance, maybe?… crossed his face before being replaced by a calm mask.
“Nice of you to wait up,” he said, tossing his keys into the bowl by the door.
