CHAPTER THIRTY–ONE–1
DOMINIC
“Are you going to tell me why you have been grumbling to yourself for the past hour? I mean, you’ve always got your head stuck in your arse, but today seems different.” My brother asked, as he stepped into the
room.
I turned and glared at Giovanni as he looked up from the pack’s paperwork. As the beta of the pack, it was his right to help out what the pack duties if his Alpha was busy.
And, that was exactly what was happening.
I had been stuck in meetings for the past hour, and the whole time, I had been trying to focus, but my mind
was preoccupied.
And the reason was the one and only Hailey.
Or, Dr. Anderson, as she called herself.
I still couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that she was here. In this town. My town. My pack.
What the fuck was she doing here?
How the fuck did she become a doctor? A famous and good one at that. A multiple award winning doctor.
How?
There were too many questions, and no answers.
“Dominic? Shit, what’s got you so preoccupied? Have a fight with Yasmine?”
Trust me, I would have preferred the latter.
“You can’t even imagine.”
“C’mon, Dom. It’s not that bad.”
“Actually, it is.”
“Okay, tell me. What is it?”
“Hailey is back.”
He seemed to stiffen, but I didn’t say anything. “That’s impossible. Why would she be back here? Are you sure, brother?”
“A hundred percent. She’s one of the new doctors at the pack’s hospital. She tried to hide her identity, masked her scent and wore a mose mask, but those eyes… I would recognize them anywhere.”
“How do you know it’s her? What if it’s someone else?”
“I cornered her and-”
13
“You did what?”
“Relax, Gio. I didn’t hurt her. When she tried to escape, I cornered her. Her scent was masked, and so was her face. So, I had no choice, but to get the truth from her. I couldn’t stand another second not knowing. And, it was her. Fuck, not thing prepared me for seeing her face once again. She had so much anger, so much rage in those eyes, but I could also see the pain. And, I didn’t know what to feel.”
“Well, she is your ex wife. You don’t get to choose how you feel for a situation you created for yourself.”
And in that moment, I wanted nothing more than to pummel my fists into my brother’s infuriating face. “She’s my mate. Ex or not. That doesn’t change anything.” I growled darkly.
“But, it does, Dom. You chose another woman over her, and left her alone. For five years. No letters. No
phone calls. You divorced her. Against her will, might I add. Left her with nothing. Absolutely nothing. So, if
you’re expecting a warm welcome, then, you are in for a surprise, because this isn’t a movie, brother. You don‘: just get a happy ending, because you’re the main character.”
“Fuck. You. Giovanni. What the hell do you know about anything?”
“I know what happened five years ago, brother. I was a witness, and anyone in Hailey’s shoes would do the
same. You already made your choice five years ago, Dom. Now, it’s time to live by her own choices. She’s
now a doctor. An amazing one at that, so I suggest you leave her be.”
“How do you know she’s a good doctor? What aren’t you telling me, Giovanni?” I asked, wondering what
else he had been hiding from me.
His expression didn’t give anything away as he smoothly said, “You said she’s amongst the new doctors at
