CHAPTER THIRTY–EIGHT–1

HAILEY

I woke up to a banging headache, feeling like I was run over by a truck. My body ached, and the smell of coffee filled the air. My head was spinning, and the bed was moving.

It felt like a damn earthquake.

The room was spinning, and I could hardly see straight.

What the fuck happened last night?

Did I get drunk or something?

I blindly reached into my bedside drawer to find some Advil, but I was only met with empty air.

I groaned, taking off my uncomfortable last night’s dress and decided to take a shower first, before going downstairs to see if there’s another box of Advil somewhere.

I had no memory of what happened after I got inside Giovanni’s car, and was thankful that he took me home, instead of Dominic.

How could I have been so careless? Why did I get so drunk that I would have risked Dominic taking me home and risking him finding out the big secret I had kept from him.

What if Giovanni wasn’t at the club? What if he hadn’t been there, and I had gone with Dominic? The thought was terrifying, and the realization hit me. If Giovanni wasn’t at the club, then what would have happened?

What would have Dominic done to me, if he found out the truth about our son.

The guilt ate at me, and I knew I couldn’t do this. I quickly shook off that thought and headed towards the bathroom.

Turning on the shower, I waited until the temperature was right, and stepped in.

I couldn’t help the moan that escaped my mouth as the warm water trickled down my back, soothing the muscles and washing away the dirt and grim.

Last night was one hell of a ride, and I had a great time.

It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time, and although, I had initially not wanted to go, I was glad

Valerie had convinced me to go.

CHAPTER THATY LIGHT

Giovanni.

The way he was staring at her, the way he was jealous. It was the same look that Dominic had in

his eyes whenever he looked at me.

And, Giovanni was jealous, even though he was denying it.

It was the look of a possessive and jealous man. Those two were even more deep into each other.

than I thought, and I just hoped Giovanni wouldn’t prove to be like his brother and break my best

friend’s heart.

Because, if he did, then I will make him pay for it. Valerie already had a rough past which we almost never talked about. She was always that cheerful, easygoing girl who put other people’s feelings

and emotions before her own.

She never showed the side of her that was hurting, and even though she was happy, there was a part of her that was broken, and lost.

She was vulnerable, and the darkness was lurking within.

Her past haunted her, and it was slowly consuming her, piece by piece.

I didn’t want her to be hurt, and I didn’t want her to go through the same thing she had went through all those years ago.

Even if I wasn’t there. I hadn’t known her when it happened, and I had only met her afterwards.

I couldn’t help but feel guilty.

Guilty for not knowing her, and not being there when she needed a friend the most.

And maybe, just maybe I could give Giovanni the benefit of doubt.

He seemed to genuinely care for Val, and he was the first person that she had trusted since her

trauma.

I had hope.

Hope that things would get better, and maybe they could finally find happiness.

After getting ready, I walked downstairs thankful that it was a Saturday and I didn’t have to go to

work.

I found the box of Advil and swallowed the pills, along with a glass of water. Making my way to the kitchen, I stopped dead in my tracks as I found my son standing next to the stove, while Giovanni was cooking.

“What are you still doing here?” I asked, confused.

“Ugh. Like someone ran me over by a truck.”

“Mommy!” Liam ran towards me, and I picked him up, kissing his cheek.

“Hey, little man. Were you good to your sitter? And where is she?”

“I sent her home. She had some things to take care of, and since I’m already here, why not stay and

watch over Liam? He’s a cute kid.”

“And, thank you. For taking us home. You could have taken us home and left, but you didn’t.”

“It’s not a big deal. Besides, you’re family. It’s what I do. But I do need to talk to you though, before Valerie wakes up and screams about how she wants me gone.”

Right on cue, her voice rang through the house. “Get the hell out of here, Giovanni! Don’t you have a woman to go chase, or do you get a high from stalking other people? Because, you’re seriously starting to creep me out.”

“She’s a feisty one, isn’t she?”

“I would apologize, but you brought it on yourself.” I shook my head, sitting on the stool. Valerie walked towards us, kissed my cheek and ruffled Liam’s hair.

“Why is he still here, Hails? Get rid of him.”

“Now, Val, listen to me-”

“No, you listen to me. I’m not talking about this again, and you are not going to threaten me. Just get out. You’re not welcomed here. I don’t care what you say. This is not your place, and you are not allowed here.”

“Liam, go to your room please?” I asked, turning towards him.

“Giovanni-” I immediately tried to calm the tension in the air.

“No, leave him. Shout all you want! That’s all you can ever do! Give orders, fuck girls and treat them like shit the next morning, and then, move on to the next victim!”

“So, that’s all this is about, huh? Because after we fucked, I didn’t stay back and make you fucking breakfast and profess my undying love for you? Is that what the problem is? Huh, princess? You didn’t get the happily ever after after having sex? That’s why you are acting like this?”

“Get out. Just get out. Leave me alone. You’re nothing but a bully, a selfish man who is obsessed with having control over people, and won’t let them be themselves. You are an asshole, and an idiot. So, why don’t you just fuck off, and leave me alone? Because, I’m not your little plaything. I won’t do as you say. So, just go away.”

“Stop, Giovanni. She’s not thinking straight.”

“Stay out of this, Hailey.” He said as he stalked towards her, he leaned into her face, their lips almost touching. “But, that wasn’t what it sounded like when you took off your panties and wanted me to fuck you senseless in the backseat of my car. That’s not what it sounded like, Val. In fact, you were the one who was begging me to fuck you. Remember? You were practically screaming my name.”

“Get away from me.” She whispered, but the tremble in her voice was enough for me to know that she was scared.

“What are you going to do, princess? Fight back, or beg for more?”

I decided that I had heard enough, and grabbed his arm, pulling him away from her.

“That’s enough, Giovanni. Let her go. Just leave. You’re only making her uncomfortable. You are not helping anyone here. Just go.”
