CHAPTER FORTY THREE T

CHAPTER FORTYTHREE1

HAILEY

The next five months flew by in a blur, and Valerie and I were settling in well in this pack much to our dismay. The pay was good, the environment has been peaceful so far, and the patients have been cooperative and nice.

There weren’t any deaths, and that was a good sign. And after Dominic’s discharge from the hospital, he had thankfully fulfilled my wishes by not showing his face at the hospital for the past five months and, honestly, it’s been the best five months of my life.

Anything that needed his attention at the hospital, he always sends Giovanni to represent him, and

even though I hated seeing his face, the Alpha’s brother was tolerable. He was the most

acceptable version of Dominic.

And today, was a mixture of emotions for me. I always felt this way on this day, every year. It was Liam’s sixth birthday.

I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe I had a six year old. Me? A mother? It was unbelievable.

It was the day he came into my life and made me a mother. The day, he was born and became my

entire world. The way I smiled for the first time, because I was miserable my entire pregnancy after

my messy divorce and couldn’t find any reason to be happy. I feared that even my child would have

come out as a sad child, like I heard in the myths, but Liam changed all of that.

He was my everything. He was the only light in my dark world. The only person who loved me unconditionally and without any reservations. And I loved him just as much. And I realized that it didn’t matter who the father was, all that mattered was that Liam was mine, and I was his mother.

And no one can take that away from me.

The past five months have been hard for me, not always been available for Liam. Sometimes, it made me question if I made the right choice of profession because the hospital kept me busy and often away from him, but all I ever wanted was to be able to provide for my son and in a couple of years, I would retire and focus on being there for him.

Liam was the best thing that came out of a horrible marriage. All I’d ever prayed for after three years of trying, but he finally came along.

I remembered when the nurse had placed him on my chest, and the feeling of pure bliss. How he felt warm and comfortable against me. It was the happiest day of my life. And I never wanted him

to leave my side.

And even though his father wasn’t around, he didn’t seem to care. He never asked, and it was like

he was happy to have me as his mother. He was always the happiest little boy, and always looked.

at life in a positive manner.

And now, today, he was six.

He was growing up too fast.

Right before my eyes.

From growing his first set of teeth, to his first steps, his first word, his first time at the kindergarten. It was a rollercoaster ride, and it was so overwhelming.

I knew that in the next ten years, he would be all grown up and won’t need his mother anymore, but

for now, he was still my baby, and I will enjoy the moments while I can.

It was currently 5am in the morning, and I’ve been up since 2am, baking a cake for him, and

making him his favorite breakfast, waffles and a chocolate milkshake.

I also bought him a couple of gifts, including his first motorcycle. I wasn’t sure how he would react,

but he seemed really excited when I showed him the pictures.

I also got him a new pair of shoes, a bunch of action figures, a couple of board games, and a brand

new Nintendo switch, which was already set up and ready to use.

He had also gotten a couple of gifts from Valerie. They were mostly clothes, toys, books, and a

few more board games.

Liam had always been a very outgoing child, and has always loved making friends. He was never the shy type. He was always so social and had a big personality, and loved making everyone laugh. He was the sweetest little boy.

CHAPTER FORTYTHREE2

It was always our little tradition over the years. I bake him a cake every year, invite his friends and have a party. And as much as I wanted to do something big for him, I couldn’t forget that this was his father’s pack, and I didn’t want too many people knowing I had a son. So, I’ll only be inviting a

few of the neighborskids over.

I put the cake into the oven, and headed back to my bedroom to take a shower. After drying off and changing into a pair of shorts and a tank top, I headed downstairs to the kitchen.

I went to Valerie’s room and woke her. Together, we were supposed to wake Liam up to birthday songs and blow the candles off the cake.

We quietly entered his room and climbed into his bed. We each took a side and began singing

Happy Birthday.

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Liam. Happy birthday to you!

He blinked a few times before opening his eyes. He stared at us with confusion before it registered, and a wide grin spread across his face.

It’s my birthday, mom!

It sure is, kiddo. And it’s the big 6, which is very special. So, are you ready for the presents?

He nodded his head vigorously, and got out of bed. Valerie and I sang the song again, and this time, he blew out his candles, and made a wish.

Happy birthday, little man. Six years old already. Time flies by too fast,” Valerie said, ruffling his

hair.

It sure does. Now, let’s have some breakfast, and then you can open your presents.

He nodded excitedly and followed us into the kitchen. The smell of his birthday cake filled the air and he grinned, taking a seat. The look of happiness on his face was priceless, and it made every single moment worth it.

Valerie and I sat next to him and began cutting the waffles, pouring him some maple syrup.

After breakfast, we brought out the presents and headed back to his bedroom.

We sat on the floor, and watched him open his presents.

Oh my god, Mommy! You got me a motorcycle? That’s so cool! Can I ride it now?

Of course, you

can.

But,

need to learn how to ride it first.

CHAPTER FORTY THREE

Yay! You’re the best mommy in the whole wide world! And I want you to be my mommy forever and ever and ever!He said, and jumped into my arms.

My heart warmed at his words, and I wrapped my arms around him. And I want to be your mommy forever and ever and ever.

You promise?

I promise, baby.I said, wiping a stray tear that escaped.

He was everything to me.

Thank you, mommy. I love you,he whispered, giving me a tight squeeze.

I love you too, sweetheart.

Hey! Don’t forget me. I helped get those presents. Where are my thanks, little man?Valerie asked,

and pulled him into a hug.

Auntie Val, you’re the bestest auntie in the world. I love you so much.

I love you too, sweets. Now, why don’t you try on your new shoes, and we’ll see if they fit.

Liam nodded and took off his slippers, replacing them with his new ones.

How does it feel, baby?

So comfy, Mommy. Thank you, Mommy. These are the best presents ever! This is the best birthday ever!

And those words made all my hard work worth it.

The guests began arriving around noon. There were a few kids from the neighborhood. The

parents stayed behind to watch their kids, but I invited them to stay for dinner.

The going great, and the kids were having the time of their lives.

The party went on till 6pm, and the kids and their parents left soon after. Valerie and I cleaned up,

while Liam was upstairs, playing with his new toys and video games.

I made spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, and the three of us ate while watching a movie.

We spent the rest of the day, doing activities and just relaxing.

It was the best birthday he’s ever had, and that was all that mattered.

CHAPTER TORTY THREE-

Later that night, I tucked him in and kissed his forehead. Good night, baby Happy birthday,

sweetheart. Sweet dreams.

Goodnight, Mommy. Thank you for making my birthday special. I love you.

I love you too. Goodnight, baby.

Goodnight, mommy.

With a final kiss on his forehead, I left the room and headed into the living room.

Valerie was seated on the couch, drinking a glass of wine.

So, what did you buy for yourself? She asked.

What do you mean?

For the past six years, you’ve only bought Liam gifts, and never once did you think about buying yourself something. So, what did you get yourself, Hails?
