HAILEY

My heart was pounding against my chest, and I could feel it in my throat. I was terrified, and could feel the fear seeping out of my skin.

The robber had tied me up and forced me to sit on the floor. His eyes were cold, and he didn’t blink

once.

“You don’t have to do this. We have money. Take what you need and leave. Please. You don’t have

to do this,” I pleaded.

“Shut the fuck up. Where’s the safe? Where do you keep the money? I hear you’re the big shot doctor, which means you’re loaded. So, tell me where it is or I’ll hurt the kid.”

“The money is in the basement, but I can’t show you. My hands are tied. Please, let me go.”

He thought for a moment and finally released the ropes that were around my ankles and wrists. He roughly grabbed me by the arm and forced me to walk.

“Which way is the basement?”

“Down the stairs.”

He pushed me, and we walked down the stairs. The sound of the TV was still blaring from the

living room.

We walked into the laundry room and turned right, entering the basement.

“Where is it?”

“Behind the wall, but you can’t access it without the codes.”

“Bitch, don’t lie to me. I swear to god, I will kill your kid.”

I took a deep breath. “Fine. It’s on the wall.”

“Open it.”

“I can’t.”

“Why the fuck not?”

“I need the codes. The security system won’t let me open it without the codes. The alarm will go.

Suddenly, he punched the wall.

“You fucking bitch. Why didn’t you say so in the first place?”

I flinched at his words. “I did. I told you that I couldn’t get the money because the system will set

the alarm off and alert the cops. I’m not lying.”

“Bitch, don’t play with me. What are the codes?”

“It’s a combination of four numbers. One, two, four, and five.”

He stared at me, and punched the wall again. “Lying bitch. What are the real codes? You have ten seconds before I go back up there and hurt your kid.”

“My phone has a picture of the codes, in my contact list. I could get it for you.”

He looked at me, as if the wheels were spinning in his head and I prayed he fell for it. “Go get your phone. Now! And don’t waste more than a second.”

I nodded, and quickly ran up the stairs, my heart still beating very fast. My hands shook as I took out my phone that has been hiding in my pockets and ran straight to Liam’s room.

I got into the room, locked the door and dragged every piece of furniture in front of the door,

blocking his entry.

Tears blurred my vision as I blindly tried to call anyone for help. I dialed 911 and an annoyed voice

answered.

“911. What’s your emergency?”

“There’s an intruder in the house. He broke into the house, and wants the safe code. He’s

threatening to hurt my son. Please, help me,” I said, and quickly gave him the address.

“Ma’am, we’ve received reports about an attempted burglary and a robbery at that location. We’re sending a car now. Please, stay put, and lock yourself in a room. Keep your child safe.”

“Please, hurry.”

“The police are on their way, ma’am.”

“Okay.”

I quickly hung up and opened the closet, pushing the clothes aside and crawled into the hidden

corner.

I prayed that the robber won’t find me, and hoped that the police would arrive soon.

It felt like a lifetime before the loud noises of sirens were heard, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

The sound of the siren suddenly grew louder and I could hear the sound of doors being kicked open and the voices of the police officers.

“Hailey, we have the house secured. You’re safe now.”

I shook my head, hugging Liam tightly and still shaken from the whole encounter. My heart hadn’t stopped beating and tears were still falling from my face.

I suddenly heard a soft knock on the door. “Hailey?”

“Hailey, you have nothing to worry about. You’re safe now. The robber has been arrested. It’s okay now. I understand that you’re afraid, but we have the house under control. You can come out.”
